3 “… Science fiction is concerned with sorting out the problems and concerns of the present world, interpreting gender concerns, race relationships, class conflicts, and other issues of our daily lives. This is one of the primary reasons science fiction is crucial to study when analyzing women’s changing roles; these new roles are often first visible in science fiction and other similar alternative media forms, such as comic books or underground ‘zines.” - Inness

9 Two Main Character Types All these characters seem to fall into one of the two main types of ‘warrior women’: 1. Sexual Aggressor/Sex Kitten 2. Tough

10 Sexual Aggressor Six from Battlestar Galactica Pris from Bladerunner Six from Battlestar Galactica Pris from Bladerunner

11 Tough: Sub-types Man in a woman’s body “Ripley” Butch lesbian “Vasquez” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW88o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW88o Emotionally tough “Captain Janeway” Man in a woman’s body “Ripley” Butch lesbian “Vasquez” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW88o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eycDq4NW88o Emotionally tough “Captain Janeway”

12 Regarding Ripley: “He strips his character of most of the trappings of cultural femininity in order to make her an equal and often superior soldier in a group of tough military men. She wears no makeup and sports cropped hair. She has tight control of her emotions, maintains a fit, muscular body, and interacts with men on the spaceship with almost no reference to her gender.” - Mainon & Ursini, pg. 190

20 In Conclusion…  Science fiction has been a leading media vehicle in sorting out social, political, cultural, gender and race issues and barriers.  Gender roles in science-fiction have come a long way but still seem to employ traditional female characteristics in order to minimize the threat that strong women pose to the male hegemony.  Race is a socially constructed idea that has been created to give people of ‘non’ race a way to understand different races.  Race is slowly diminishing as different races are morphing and creating new races.  Science fiction has been a leading media vehicle in sorting out social, political, cultural, gender and race issues and barriers.
