3 CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET To make a connection to the Internet, you need three things: 1. I.S.P. 2. A modem 3. A telephone line of cell tower

4 1. INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER (I.S.P) This is an organization that provides access to the Internet. Common examples are: M.S.N., Yahoo, AOL, TSTT, Comcast

5 2. MODEM Modulator/demodulator. This is a device that converts analog data to digital data and vice versa.

7 3. PHONE LINE OR CELL TOWER

8 There are three ways to connect to the Internet: 1. Dial up 2. Digital Subscriber Line (D.S.L.) 3. Wireless

9 A form of Internet access that uses telephone networks to establish a dialed connection to an Internet service provider (ISP) via telephone lines. The user's computer or router uses an attached modem to encode and decode packets of data and control information.

10 A family of technologies that provide internet access by transmitting digital data over the wires of a local telephone network. It is faster than dial up

11 This connection does not need cables of any kind. They are usually implemented and administered using electromagnetic induction for short range communication, radio communication, microwave communication for long range communication.

12 E-MAIL This means Electronic Mail. This is a method of exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients. Modern email operates across the Internet or other computer networks.

13 To send and receive emails you need: 1. An Internet Service Provider

14 2. An Email address This is a virtual mail box where electronic messages can be received. It is made up of two parts: 1.Local part – this is the part before the @ sign. 2.Domain part – this is the part after the @ sign. twinkletoes5@yahoo.com

15 An email attachment These are files that can be attached to your e-mail and sent to someone. Some files you can send as attachments include: Photos Documents Music

16 SPAM Also known as junk email or unsolicited bulk email is mail that is sent by individuals or organizations in bulk for the purchase of marketing or more devious intentions such as phishing or malware.phishingmalware

17 WORLD WIDE WEB W.W.W. This is one of the services that runs on the Internet. It is a collection of text, documents and other types of information.

18 Common terms Web browser This is a software application for retrieving, presenting and traversing information on the World Wide Web Examples: Internet Explorer Mozilla Firefox Google Chrome

19 Search Engine A web search engine is a program used inside of a web browser designed to search for information on the World Wide Web. The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to as search engine results pages. Examples MSN - Bing

20 Web page This is a document or information resource that is suitable for the World Wide Web and can be accessed through a web browser and displayed on a monitor or mobile device.

22 Web site This is a set of related web pages containing content such as text, images, video, audio, etc. A website is hosted on at least one web server, accessible via a network such as the Internet.

23 Hyperlink A hyperlink is a graphic or a piece of text in an Internet document that can connect readers to another webpage, or another portion of a document.

25 HTML HyperText Markup Language is the main markup language for displaying web pages and other information that can be displayed in a web browser. HTML is written in the form of HTML elements consisting of tags enclosed in angle brackets <>.

27 HTTP HyperText Transfer Protocol is an application protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems. HTTP is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web.

28 U.R.L. Uniform Resource Locator. This is the address of a website. http://wiki.answers.com Protocol Server name Domain

29 INTERNET SERVICES There are many services provided on the Internet: 1. Podcast Podcast 2. Chat and messaging Chat and messaging 3. Telnet Telnet 4. Newsgroup Newsgroup 5. E-commerce E-commerce 6. 30 Podcast These can be an audio or video file that can be downloaded from a podcast website to your computer and played. They are usually radio or television shows.

32 Chat and messaging This allows users to communicate with each other using I.R.C. (Internet Relay Chat) which is a way to send text messages over the Internet. Users can also log into chat rooms and discuss different topics with people around the world.

34 Telnet This is a technology that allows you to connect directly to another computer in order to access data from it. Example a company may want to access one of their client’s database

36 Newsgroup These are websites that allow people to share their thoughts and opinions on a particular subject or to keep people updated on a subject.

38 E-commerce This is virtual shopping. You can buy physical goods over the Internet and have them delivered to your address. You can also buy music and read books.

40 E-learning This is any kind of learning done over the internet. There are many colleges and universities that offer classes on-line

42 Bulletin Boards and forums This is similar to Newsgroups. They are more often called forums. They allow people with questions to ask them and other people will answer them.

44 Blogs This term comes from weblog. It is a web page which someone treats like a journal where they express their personal thoughts and share it with others. Blogs now have several uses: Companies use it to give information to their customers Travelers use it to update their family and friends of their activities. People use it to share their opinion on places or events. Example food, movie or book critics.

46 Voice over IP This means Voice Over Internet Protocol. This allows you to talk to people over the internet instead of on the telephone. A popular VoIP application is Skype

48 Social Networking These are sites that allow users to have their own page where they can share photos, videos and information about themselves. Popular sites include Face book, Twitter and MySpace

50 GLOSSARY PHISHING – This is a website that disguises itself as a trustworthy entity in order to obtain confidential information such as credit card numbers, usernames and passwords. MALWARE – Short for Malicious software. This is software used or created to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems.
