Bell Work 1. Pick up an article from the front table. 2. SURVEY the article, looking for illustrations, photographs, bold words, charts, graphs, etc. that may provide you with clues as to what the article is about. 3. On your paper, write 2 to 3 sentences predicting what you believe the article will be about. Example – “I predict that this article is about….”

Objective: To fully understand the reason for dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, and its effect on the end of WWII.

Creating Questions With the person sitting next to you, write 2-3 QUESTIONS that an individual may find the answer to within the text. Note: W rite the questions as if you are creating an assignment for the rest of the class. And, YES, you BOTH need to write down the questions!

Predictions 1.You AND your partner need to join another partner team, creating a group of FOUR. 2.The four of you need to take all of your questions and select ONE question to turn into a PREDICTION about the article. 3.The entire group needs to decide on ONE PREDICTION about the article and write it down.

Class Predictions Directions: As I copy down each of the groups’ predictions onto the board, YOU need to copy them down too!

Objective: To fully understand the reason for dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, and its effect on the end of WWII.

“Was the U.S. Bombing of Nagasaki Necessary to end WWII?” READ the passage quietly. As you read, think about the predictions the class made earlier.

Reading Responses Directions: 1.Listen as I read the predictions out loud. 2.While I’m reading them, place a + sign next to the predictions that were proved TRUE through the reading, a – next to the predictions that were proved FALSE, and a ? next to the predictions that the article did not clearly explain.

Summary Directions: Write a 3-5 sentence SUMMARY of the passage. Example (which you may NOT copy): Australian author Craig Collie wrote a book arguing that Japan would have surrendered in WWII without the dropping of the atomic bombs. He states that the decision to drop the bombs was not made by President Truman, but rather a high ranking military officer. The bombs, according to Collie, did not even push Japan to end the war. Instead, he claims that the advancing Red Army, who entered the war on August 9 th, provoked the Japanese to surrender. Nevertheless, the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, providing immediate and lasting effects that prompt us to ask, “My God, what have we done?”

Exit TICKET Directions: Write “ Exit Ticket ” at the bottom of the page. Answer each of the following questions in complete sentences. 1.WHY was Nagasaki chosen as the site for the second bomb? 2.Explain the CAUSE and EFFECT of the nuclear bomb being dropped on Nagasaki. 3.DESCRIBE the impact of the use of nuclear warfare during WWII on our world today.

Objective: To fully understand the reason for dropping the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, and its effect on the end of WWII.
