6. The German labour market
Germany has one of the lowest unemployment rates (6.4%) among EU Member States.
For young people between the ages of 15 and 25, Germany has one of the lowest unemployment rates (ca. 7%).
Dual vocational training is the main success factor in the German labour market. In this way employers have new recruits in their companies at an early stage and work with them to get good qualifications.
There are particularly good job prospects in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Across Germany there is a shortage of experts in the areas of mechanical and automotive engineering. At 141 days, the nationwide vacancy period is 68% higher than the average of 84 days. In mathematical terms, for every 100 registered vacancies in mechanical and automotive engineering, there are only 102 unemployed persons who meet this job requirement.
• The vacancy period has continued to increase compared to the same period last year but when looking at the ratio of unemployed persons to vacancies, as the last analysis undertaken in June has already shown, there has been a slight easing in the shortage situation.
• The shortage of skilled workers among mechanical and automotive engineering experts is evident in nearly all western federal states where, because of the structure of the economy, there is above-average demand for engineers (automotive industry, aircraft industry, etc). In Schleswig-Holstein there is evidence of employment bottlenecks of skilled workers.
• In the eastern federal states the situation is differentiated. There is also a shortage in Thuringia. In Saxony-Anhalt there is evidence of employment bottlenecks of skilled workers.
• At the moment there is still skilled worker potential in Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania and Saxony. Here the number of unemployed persons is considerably higher than the number of vacancies.
• In the coming years the strong increase in the number of students should also contribute to an easing of bottleneck situations.

There is a significant shortage of medical practitioners in most western federal states. Registered vacancies for medical practitioners (excluding dentists) are vacant for 172 days on a nationwide average basis (+106% when compared in overall terms). In addition, the number of unemployed persons only barely exceeds the number of registered vacancies (in mathematical terms 128 unemployed persons for every 100 vacancies).
• Apart from Berlin and Saxony, the vacancy periods in all federal states are considerably higher than the nationwide average. At the same time there are fewer than 150 unemployed persons for every 100 registered vacancies. In most states there are even fewer unemployed persons than registered vacancies.

11. Legal access to the German Labour Market
Free access to the German labour market for citizens of EU/EEA member states
Members of third party countries need in general a work permit (except High-Potentials with an annual gross income of at least € or € if they have a profession in high demand)
