You have just moved to a new town called Drearyville, where Mayor Doldrum, a very boring mayor, is enforcing a set of sad and dreary laws, which keep the people from working together and helping one another. The citizens of Drearyville follow the Mayor’s rules, but they are very sad. Drearyville is truly a very dreary place. This is where you come in! You can help! Your job is to learn about CIVIC ENGAGEMENT and convince Mayor Doldrum that working together as a community of good citizens is the best way to fix up his town and to make everyone happy! When we WORK TOGETHER, we can MAKE OUR SCHOOL and COMMUNITY BETTER! Thanks to you, Mayor Doldrum has decided to make some big changes in Drearyville, including changing the town’s name to COOPERATIONVILLE! The citizens of Cooperationville will now work together every day to SHARE RESOURCES and SUPPORT EACH OTHER through Civic Engagement opportunities! Way to go, new neighbor! You did it! 14 Teacher Page Objectives & Accommodations Students will make observations about the importance of civic engagement and will construct a community based project which will demonstrate how civic engagement can improve local society. Students will work in levelized pairs to accommodate reading, English language, and technology needs Students requiring additional assistance will be provided with a WebQuest Checklist and note- taking template to help with organization and guide them through completion of the WebQuest Academic Standard SS-EP-1.3.2 (3 rd Grade) Students will identify and give examples of good citizenship at home, at school and in the community (e.g., helping with chores, obeying rules, participating in community service projects such as recycling, conserving natural resources, donating food/supplies) and explain why civic engagement in the community is important.
