J/  production in p+p collisions at PHENIX and gluon distribution QWG meeting at FNAL September 20-22 Hiroki Sato (Kyoto University) for the PHENIX collaboration  Total and differential cross section results and gluon distribution  Prospects for spin asymmetry (A LL ) measurements and polarized gluon distribution

The PHENIX Detector Independent measurements of J/  using both e + e - channel and  +  - channel Low momentum (p T ) cut and wide rapidity coverage  enables the extraction of the total cross section at the highest energy ++ -- e+e+ e-e- Interaction-trigger and vertex detectors   Muon Arms (North + South) 1.2 < |  | < 2.4,  = 2  p tot > 2 GeV/c e, , h  Central Arms (West + East) |  | < 0.35,  =  p T > 0.2 GeV/c

Invariant Mass  Clear J/  peaks with small background in both e + e - and  +  - pairs N J/  =46N J/  =65 PHENIX Run2(2001-2002) p+p at  s=200 GeV

d  J/  /dp T  Reasonable agreement with NRQCD (COM) predictions  Increased statistics in high-p T is useful for more quantitative argument  Run-3 (~10 times statistics) and later

 Average transverse momentum ( ) is slightly higher than lower energy results.  Energy dependence can well be fitted with a logarithmic function. = 1.80  0.23 (stat.)  0.16 (syst.) GeV/c

J/  rapidity distribution and gluon distribution function In hadron-hadron collisions at moderate energy (  s  20GeV), p T -integrated yield should be dominated by g+g  J/ . Neglecting other contributions (q+q_bar, gluon fragmentation and b-decay), rapidity (or x F ) distribution and energy dependence of total cross section can be simply written by gluon distribution function g(x)

d  J/  /dy and  J/  Rapidity shape is mainly sensitive to gluon distribution function g(x,Q) in the proton and consistent with most of typical PDF sets  (p+p  J/  X) = 4.0  0.6 (stat.)  0.6 (syst.)  0.4 (abs.) µb using Br (J/  l + l - ) = 0.059 Muon ArmsCentral Arms Using the curve which fits our data best, total cross section was obtained

 J/  (  s dependence)  Energy dependence of  J/  is sensitive to gluon distribution function and its scale Q  Our new result and lower-energy results are consistent with typical gluon distribution functions with a reasonable choice of Q  confirms the gluon fusion picture of J/  production in hadron- hadron collisions in a wide energy range

 s dependence of d  J/  /dy| y=0 New Tevatron data (  s = 2TeV) will further constrain gluon distribution ? CDF Run-II preliminary

 J/  (absolute value) Absolute normalization for  J/  is sensitive to production model  Color-evaporation model (CEM) can explain  J/  using  J/  (fraction of J/  to all produced cc pairs) ~ 0.06 determined by photo-production data  Color-singlet model (CSM) Color singlet production underestimate  J/  by a large (~10) factor  Color-octet model (COM) Consistent using the color octet matrix element + 7/M c 2 = 0.02 GeV 3 from photo-production data, but has large uncertainties from Extraction of color-octet matrix element Charm quark mass Factorization and renormalization scales

Measurement of polarized gluon distribution in polarized p+p collisions ~+1 (CEM) ~ -1 (CSM) -0.3 ~ +0.7 (COM) Gupta and Mathews, Phys. Rev. D55, 7144 We have confirmed that J/  production is dominated by gluon fusion -> ready to measure polarized gluon distribution (  G(x)) in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at RHIC  ++ +-+-  A LL (stat.) ~ 1% with 1-year full luminosity (32pb -1 )

Conclusion  J/  particles are clearly identified with PHENIX with a small background via e + e - and  +  - decays in the first p+p Run at RHIC (Run-2) at  s = 200 GeV  p T distribution is consistent with Color-Octet Model prediction. Average p T, y = 1.7 = 1.80  0.23 (stat.)  0.16 (syst.) GeV/c is slightly higher than lower energy results.  Rapidity distribution is consistent with gluon distribution function and total cross section  J/  (  s = 200 GeV) = 4.0  0.6 (stat.)  0.6 (syst.)  0.4 (abs.) µb was extracted.  Energy dependence of  J/  can be well reproduced by gluon distribution function.  The absolute normalization for  J/  can be reproduced well by the Color-Evaporation Model and the Color-Octet Model.  We plan to measure double-longitudinal spin asymmetries (A LL ) which are sensitive to polarized gluon distribution at leading order.
