7 Holden is a typical teenager because he displays behaviors that are representative of adolescents whose brains are still developing. Most teenagers struggle and worry about “fitting in” with their peers. In The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield is portrayed as an ostracized and alienated teenager. Holden’s behavior was troubling to 1950’s society that stressed conformity.

8 Anxiety Disorders – Teen Health “It’s completely normal to worry when things get complicated.” “If you knew Stradlater you’d have been worried too.” (40) It is natural for everyone, especially adolescents, to worry when faced with new and challenging circumstances. Holden is worrying about his friend Jane who is going on a date with Stradlater. Holden is a typical teenager because he worries/displays anxiety when faced with complex and difficult situations Holden is confused about his relationship with Jane and Stradlater and this naturally causes him to worry.
