1. Description: Use large posters of the carbon cycle to follow the flow of carbon and the organisms affected by it. Goals: Explain carbon and nitrogen cycles.

2. Objectives: Day 11 Identify major roles in the carbon cycle. Label the flow and define the key terms of the carbon cycle.

3. Warm-Up Charades!! In groups, you will be responsible for acting out terms that will be given to you. The class will not know your term so do your best representing it. You may not to speak or make noises. You may act out and make gestures. You will have the next 10 minutes to develop ideas and then a maximum of 2 minutes to act it out.

4. Charades On your warm-up, try to determine what term / action other groups are trying to represent. Write the group number next to the term on your “Charades Term” handout which you believe they were presenting.

5. Carbon Cycle Terms Now we’ll develop our definitions for these terms.

6. Carbon Cycle In your groups define each of the following terms as best as you: Combustion Decomposition Erosion Fossil Fuels Photosynthesis

7. Carbon Cycle Share definitions with the class. Combustion Decomposition Erosion Fossil Fuels Photosynthesis

8. Carbon Cycle Each group is receiving a large carbon cycle and markers. Using the markers, label examples of the carbon cycle terms we’ve examined so far today. Use the arrows for clues on where the carbon is moving. Based on where it is coming from and going should help you determine which of the processes (terms) is occurring. Terms can be used more than once.

9. Carbon Cycle Now that all groups are finished let’s go over the different movements as a class and fill in our class poster.

10. Think about it… 1. What states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) do you find carbon in throughout the cycle? 2. How could humans have an impact on this cycle? 3. What organisms use carbon? 4. How do different organisms use carbon differently?

11. Extension: 1. For homework, complete the “Carbon Cycle Map” and define the key terms.
