Business: An overview –

Business: An overview A very popular course choice - The 2013/14 Destination of Leavers from Higher Education survey (DLHE) indicates that 38,000 or 11.2% of all UK domiciled first degree graduates studied business and administrative subjects. The employment rates across all business-related subjects were above the average for all graduates and the average salaries ranged between £16,500 and £28,000. Some courses are particularly academic and self-directed, others are aimed at those which require a more practical, skills oriented approach. You can combine the study of Business with almost anything you can think of. Career opportunities, graduate from these degree courses are in considerable demand. They enter public administration, the civil service, transport, communications, commerce, accountancy, banking and insurance, the armed forces, not-for-profit organisations. In fact it is relevant to any career stream you can think of.

So what does this all mean? The advantage is that there is lots to choose from … but we need to ensure the learner is choosing the right option for them. The disadvantage is that there is lots of competition. So how can learners stand out and how can they choose the right option?

Advising your learners Use some of these helpful web resources 1.www.ukcoursefinder.com = Good for those who don’t know what they would like to study. Has a subjects/interests questionnaire which provides degree subject suggestions based on your answers.www.ukcoursefinder.com 2.www.unistats.direct.gov.uk = Compares courses from different universities. You can see what students thought of the course (through the National Students Survey), the average salaries after finishing, how many students go into managerial or professional level work, how much teaching time you can expect on the course and more!www.unistats.direct.gov.uk 3.www.university.which.co.uk= Has lots of information and filters to help you find a course to suit your needs. It also has information on how competitive a course is by telling you the percentage of students applying who receive an offer.www.university.which.co.uk 4.www.prospects.ac.uk = Focuses on how you can use your degree and the areas you could go into after graduationwww.prospects.ac.uk

HE Qualifications and Mode of Study Is full time the best option? Is HE in FE an option? What style of assessment would be best? Is a HND/Foundation Degree etc. a better option?

Of this total 28,280 applicants were over 35. 3.Second to A- Levels BTECs are the most widely held qualification held by applicants, according to the UCAS end of cycle report (2014). 4.On average 20,000 Access to HE students apply each year for a degree course.

Discussion Groups Focusing specifically on Access and BTEC learners in your group discuss: 1.What are the key factors to consider when supporting learners who want to go on to study Business at HE? 2.What additional support, if any, do your learners need when applying for higher education/ or do you anticipate they would need?
