The Periodic Table Biochemistry Class Notes 1

I. Atoms A. An individual atom is very small. B. Every single object is composed of atoms. Your body is made up of many individual atoms.

C. Atoms have three parts: 1. Proton- positively charged particle 2. Neutrons- no charge 3. Electron- negatively charged particle

II. Elements A. There are also many different types of atoms. (over a 100). These different types are called elements. Examples: carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, gold, silver, tin, lead etc.

III. The Periodic Table A. The Periodic Table was first discovered in 1869 by Dmitry Mendeleyev. B. It is a way of presenting all the elements to show their similarities and differences.

IV. How to use the periodic table A. The number of protons and electrons is the same as the atomic number. B. The number of neutrons is found by subtracting the atomic number from the atomic mass.

V. Location of Electrons A. Electrons go around the outside of the nucleus in different energy levels. B. The 1 st energy level can hold up to 2 electrons, the second can hold up to 8.

Summary: What are the building blocks of everything? What is the purpose of the periodic table?
