Between 1970 and 2012, the foreign-born population of New Mexico increased from about 23,000 to 192,000, or by about 170,000 over the 42-year period.

In 2012, there were 192,000 foreign born in New Mexico, representing less than 1 percent of the total 40.8 million foreign born in the United States.

About 9 percent of New Mexico’s population is foreign born, which is lower than the national average of 13 percent but higher than several surrounding states, including Oklahoma, Kansas, and Utah.

Doña Ana and Luna Counties were among the counties with the highest percentage foreign born, along with Lea, Chaves, and Santa Fe Counties.

Over three-fourths of all foreign-born in New Mexico were from Latin America, compared with over half for the nation as a whole.

The majority of the foreign born in New Mexico speak a language other than English at home, with half speaking English less than “very well.”

Almost half of all foreign born in New Mexico did not complete high school, while over one-third have their high school diploma or some college.

This was lower than the coverage in many neighboring states and in the nation as a whole.

21 Economics and Statistics Administration U.S. CENSUS BUREAU U.S. Department of Commerce Summary and Conclusion (continued) The foreign born in New Mexico, when compared to the foreign born in the United States, are more likely to: –Be noncitizens –Be from Latin America –Be married, live in a family household and – if female – have given birth in the past 12 months –Speak a language other than English at home –Not have a high school degree –Not be in the labor force and, if they are, be unemployed –Work in service and natural resources/construction/maintenance occupations –Not have health insurance coverage –Have a lower median household and family income –Live in poverty 21
