SCITT - 18.3.15 Getting the job you want.

Aims To apply for a job To prepare well To be successful at interview To be offered a job To accept the job and be a team player To stay in teaching and make a difference

Your current placement Is there a possibility of a job at the school you are at? If so do you know the expectation and can you give the school what it wants from you? Will you apply there or somewhere else? Do not assume the job is automatically yours!

What is out there? Check what is available. Some examples to discuss ……………………….. (Looking at specs and JDs) DO YOUR HOMEWORK –type of school, size of school, travelling distance etc Visit the school prior to applying

Applying for jobs Each school is unique so blanket applications will be your downfall. Visit the school and visit the website. Know the name of the Head and make sure you get all the necessary info to complete application form

Completing the application form Session will discuss application filling form and the dos and don’ts. Take your time /presentation etc Eg Why letter of application not CV. Application form asks you the info it needs to make decision about shortlisting. Stand out letter gets you shortlisted. CV tells the Head and Govs what you want to tell them so not the best model.

Extra information If you have had another surname do not fail to fill in. If you are related to another council member ensure you fill in. Make sure you referees are recent and useful. You will need all original qualifications so get them ready to take with you and the info for DBS. If you have a criminal record don’t hide behind it. Don’t let it stop you from applying unless it is very serious e.g child protection.

How the application form will be interrogated by the panel Assume you are one of many applicants. Study the job spec and see if you meet essentials. Filling in the form You need to stand out in the crowd so your letter must make that difference. You need to be shortlisted. Think about your referees. Discussion dos and don’ts.

You are shortlisted. Accept immediately by phone and follow up with email confirming you will be attending. Consider what you will wear. Read what the interview process will be. Prepare for it.Don’t think you can wing it or bluff – Heads have seen it all before!

Some examples that are out there You may get invited prepare for: Teach a small group of children/half a class on a given topic for 20 minutes and be observed. Short presentation on education issue. Meet the governors and staff Meet the school council Take some examples of children’s books and talk about the work you have done.

Prepare well Consider your focus. Consider your group. You need to be judged good or better. What can you do to give the best impression at observation? (what will you offer those observing) What will they ask you after observation?

At the interview Interview panel. Who will it be? Questions - you probably have googled already. What have you anticipated they will ask you? What will they definitely ask you about? What might they ask you about? Areas for development! Take something up your sleeve!

At the end of the interview Be prepared to ask a question - if I were successful would there be an induction programme? Two further questions they will ask you. Do you think the interview process has been fair? If we offered you the job are you still an interested candidate?

It’s yours - congratulations What next? A whole new world! Arrangements in place. Your life has changed – you are in control of the future.

Team member How? What will you expect from your colleagues? What can your colleagues expect from you? What will you expect from SLT? What can SLT expect from you? Scribble some genuine responses.

Advice from someone who knows! What about the staff room? What about the staff? What about the school? What about workload? What about parents? What about the Head?
