Scripture Reading: Isaiah 58: 6 to 8

Isaiah 58: 6 to 8 True Fasting
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice     and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free     and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them,     and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

Isaiah 58: 6 to 8 True Fasting
Then your light will break forth like the dawn,     and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you,     and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.

Hymn 229 We Plough the Fields and Scatter

HYMN 229 Verse 1 (of 3) We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God’s almighty hand; he sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine and soft refreshing rain.

HYMN 229 Refrain All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all his love.

HYMN 229 Verse 2 (of 3) He only is the Maker of all things near and far; he paints the wayside flower, he lights the evening star; the winds and waves obey him, by him the birds are fed; much more to us, his children, he gives our daily bread.

Hymn 233

Hymn 233 Verse 1 (of 4) Come, you thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest-home: all is safely gathered in, ere the winter storms begin; God, our Maker, will provide for our needs to be supplied: come to God's own temple, come; raise the song of harvest-home.

Hymn 233 Verse 2 (of 4) All this world is God's own field, bearing fruit his praise to yield; wheat and tares together sown are to joy or sorrow grown; first the blade and then the ear, then the full corn shall appear; Lord of harvest, grant that we wholesome grain and pure may be.

Hymn 233 Verse 3 (of 4) For the Lord our God shall come, and shall take his harvest home; from his field shall in that day all offences purge away; give his angels charge at last in the fire the tares to cast; but the fruitful ears to store in his storehouse evermore.

Hymn 233 Last Verse (of 4) Even so, Lord, quickly come, bring your final harvest home; gather all your people in, free from sorrow, free from sin; there, forever purified, in your presence to abide; come, with all your angels, come, raise the glorious harvest-home!
