2 Topics  NCEP Organization  NCEP Central Computer Systems  Description of Current Model Production Suite  Asia-Pacific Satellite Data Used Currently by NCEP  New NCEP Asia-Pacific Satellite Data Requests  Non Satellite Data Requests

3 NCO Mission “Leading NCEP’s Information Technology”

4 Central Computer Systems Two Identical IBM Systems for Operations  Primary located in Gaithersburg, MD  Backup located in Fairmont, WV  Each systems consists of: –144 Power-5+ nodes –16 Processors (32 virtual processors) per nodes –1.9 GHz clock speed –4608 total (virtual) processors –32 GB memory per node –134 TB disk storage –125 TB tape storage  Final option on current contract in 2009 in 2009 –Performance guarantee is 2.5X current CCS –Primary system to be moved to Omaha (Collocated with USAF)

5 Central Computer Systems  R&D System - Gaithersburg –86 Power5+ nodes –16 processors (32 virtual) per node –1.9 GHz clock speed –2752 (virtual) processors –32 GB memory per node –160 TB disk storage –11.3 PB tape storage OperationsR & D Mist Dew Haze Transition Into Operations Internal/External Partnerships JCSDA Climate Test Bed Model Test Bed R&D is ~60% of one operational system Climate Development

6 Current Production Suite Global Models  Global Forecast System (GFS) –Run 4 times daily to 384 hours (16 days) –T382L64 – 00-180 hours –T190L64 – 180-384 hours –Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation (GSI) analysis –Hybrid (Sigma-Pressure) vertical coordinate system

7 Current Production Suite Global Models  Global Ensemble Forecast System (GEFS) –20 members + 1 control – run 4 times daily  84 total members per day –T126L28 – 00-384 hours –Producing bias corrected ensemble forecasts for 35 variables. –Supporting the NAEFS and TIGGE programs

8 Current Production Suite Global Models  Climate Forecast System (CFS) –Currently, two fully-coupled nine-month forecasts are made every day at T62L64 resolution – The present CFS operational system is frozen – Development work is underway at EMC to improve the CFS –All data available via FTP/HTTP

9 Current Production Suite Global Models  NOAA Wave Watch III (NWW3) –Run 4 times daily with forecasts to 180 hours –Global model run at 1.25x1.0 degree resolution –Regional and hurricane based models run at 0.25 degree resolution –Great Lakes wave model at 4 km resolution to 84 hours –Currently running a 10 member global wave ensemble system as well (84 hours – 4/day)

10 Current Production Suite Regional Models  North American Mesoscale (NAM) –Run 4 times daily to 84 hours (with GFS extension to 192 hours) –GSI analysis with 12 km resolution covering all of North America –Now using high resolution radar data as input  Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) –Run 24 times daily to either 9 or 12 hours –13 km resolution over US, S. Canada, N. Mexico  Hurricane Runs –Two nested models – GFDL and HWRF –Run on demand to 126 hours

11 Current Production Suite Regional Models  Short range Regional Ensembles (SREF) –20 members run 4/day to 84 hours over North America –Multiple model and physics cores used (40-45 km resolution)  Real Time Mesoscale Analysis (RTMA) –Hourly 5 km analysis covering continental US  Daily Real-time global SST (RTG SST HR) analysis –1/12 deg latitude, longitude resolution – generated every day (22:30 UTC) using latest 24 h of real-time data.

12 Current Production Suite Regional Models  Atlantic Ocean Forecast System (OFS) –Horizontal grid: 4-7 km in Gulf of Mexico and the East Coast of U.S. –Bathymetry: ETOPO2 (NGDC) –Coastal boundary: blend of bathymetry and coastline datasets (NGDC). –Surface forcing: GFS (NCEP) –River outflow/runoff: blend of observations (US rivers USGS) and climatology (RIVDIS) –Open boundaries: T,S from climatology, –SSH and barotropic velocity from tidal model (TPX06) and climatology.

13 Current Production Suite  Most products from all of these modeling systems available via public web/ftp sites ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov – /pub/data/nccf/com/ tgftp.nws.noaa.gov – /SL.us008001/ST.opnl/

14 Data Requests

15 Asia-Pacific Satellite Data Used at NCEP Currently Used:  Low-density satellite derived visible and IR winds from GMS MTSAT (SATOB format) - used operationally in Global-GSI and NAM-GSI  COSMIC GPS Radio Occultation data (joint project between Taiwan and US) - used operationally in Global-GSI Coming Soon:  High-density satellite derived visible and IR winds from GMS MTSAT (BUFR format) - will replace above later this Fall in Global-GSI and NAM-GSI In Testing:  JMA profiler winds - still being tested but expect to use in future  Hong Kong profiler winds - still being tested but expect to use in future  High-density satellite derived water vapor winds from GMS MTSAT (BUFR format) - still being tested but may use in future

16 New Asia-Pacific Satellite Data Requests  GPS-IPW (Integrated Precipitable Water) - ground-based stations supposedly in Japan (US POC : Seth.I.Gutman@noaa.gov)  Altimeter data (Jason-3 etc.) for sea surface height data and wave data.  Products containing SST and surface wind data as well as ocean color data

17 Non Satellite Data Requests  We are now receiving Korean AMDAR aircraft data –Are there any other sources of AMDAR data that we are not currently receiving via GTS?  Surface mesoscale observation networks (Mesonets)  RASS (Radar Acoustic Sounding System) platforms in Japan – If available  VAD (Velocity-Azimuth Display) winds from ground based radars

18 Non Satellite Data Requests (continued)  JMA ensemble fields – NCEP needs to explore with JMA the possibility of a real time data transfer option.  Mandatory and significant level data from CMA atmospheric rawinsondes –Currently only receive significant levels for about 1/4 of the available rawinsondes from CMA  Additional rawinsondes from the Tibet plateau  Access to real time buoy data (wave info)

19 Questions/Comments  Contact Info: Brent Gordon NOAA/NWS/NCEP 301-763-8000 x7193 Brent.Gordon@noaa.gov

20 Appendix

21 New NCEP Building  After many years of planning and budget negiotiations, NCEP is finally starting to build its new facility in College Park, MD.  Occupancy to begin in early 2009 with final transition in Summer 2009

22 Production Suite  NCEP plans to make significant changes to its production suite over the next 10 years  These changes will allow us to better use the computing resources we have or expect to have.  Users of NCEP data and products will most notice this restructuring by the different times our data and products become available
