2 Bellwork: Define Terms 0 Relative minors: are major and minor scales that have the same key signatures. 0 Parallel minors: a major scale and a minor scale that have the same tonic/starting pitch. 0 Augmented: an interval that is one semitone greater than the corresponding perfect interval. 4 Circle of 5ths Poster 0 Using art supplies and large paper, create an artistic rendering of the circle of 5ths.

5 Other tricks: How to decipher the key name 0 To find the name of a sharp key, go up a half-step from the last sharp. 0 The name of a flat key is the name of the second to last flat. 0 There are two rebel keys that break the rules: 0 C major: no sharps or flats and 0 F major: one flat

6 Key signature flash cards 0 In pairs, identify key signatures. 0 Honors: Identify minor keys too.

7 Relative minors 0 To find the relative minor of a major key, go down a minor 3 rd. 0 For example, the relative minor of E-flat major is c minor.

10 CFU: Snowball 0 Write the name of four major keys on your sheet. 0 Crumple it and throw the ball to the front of the class. 0 Retrieve one snowball and write the relative minor keys. 0 Put your name on both your question and your answer!

12 Scratchbooks 0 I have made composition scratch books for everybody. 0 Keep you scratchbook with you at all times, so if you think of a melody you can write it down! 0 You may see your artist friends working in their sketchbooks- you can do this too, but musically!

13 Composition projects 0 Continue working on your composition projects and we will hear them at the end of class today. 0 Some suggestions: 0 Use your earphones/ bring earphones to class from now on so you can better concentrate on your project. 0 If you have just been playing things by ear, the time has come to write it down. 0 I will be collecting these for a grade.
