1 Layers of the Atmosphere
1 1.4ppt Layers of the Atmosphere W&C Chapter 1.4 Pages 31-36

2 How are the layers classified?
The four main layers of the Atmosphere are classified according to changes in: Additional Info

3 A. Troposphere Tropo = changing conditions We live in this layer
Where weather occurs Thinnest Layer (10km), contains most of the mass of the atmosphere Clouds form in this layer.

4 B. Stratosphere Strato = layered, spread out Has the Ozone Layer (O3)
Absorbs UV radiation, heating up this layer and making it warmer higher up.

5

6 The Stratoposhere… A Is where weather occurs B Absorbs UV radiation C
Is where we live D Burns up meteors

7 C. Mesosphere Meso = Middle Coldest layer at -90˚C
Burns up Meteoroids you see as a shooting star.

8 D. Thermosphere (Divided into 2 layers)
Thermo = Heat Molecules are spread very far apart No Outer Limit N2 & O2 molecules absorb heat, raising their temperature to 1,800°C You would still feel cold here. Why? Molecules have a lot of energy, but are so far apart that you would only rarely bump into them

9 D1. Ionosphere Ions = charged particles
Causes the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) Bounce radio communications off this layer.

10 D2. Exosphere Exo = “outer” Outermost layer of the thermosphere
Satellites orbit here.

11 The layer where weather occurs is the…
Troposphere B Mesosphere C Thermosphere D Exosphere

12 The layer where satellites orbit is the…
Ionosphere B Mesosphere C Thermosphere D Exosphere

13 Scaling the Atmosphere
Convert miles to km Convert km to cm Divide by 200,000 to get your scale cm Create your scale model by following steps 4-7 on the scaling the atmosphere sheet.

14

15

16 Exit Pass List 3 of the layers of Earth’s atmosphere.
Describe why 2 of them are important.
