Look Windwards! An Interview with a Fairtrade Banana Grower Copyright © 2006 Farming and Countryside Education With special thanks to Mr Da Silva

Is Fairtrade Popular? “Yes I believe it will take over the whole market in the UK. It is the only way the Windward Islands could survive.” Q.1 Click video to PLAY

Are Fairtrade Rules Tough? “Fairtrade has some criteria; we have to meet them. In every country, there are laws and if you break a law, you get punished. Similarly with Fairtrade if you break a law (rule), you get punished. I agree with it.” Click video to PLAY Q.2

What Is It Like Working With Other Fairtrade Farmers? “It is okay. There are some farmers to be honest, who don’t really understand. Those of us who understand would teach them. We pass on the message.” Q.3 Click video to PLAY

Why do you use less chemicals for Fairtrade bananas? “Some are asking why we can’t burn (spray) grass! Why this and why that! We tell them to use less chemicals because it is better for the consumer and the producer (which is the farmer). These chemicals are hardly (sparingly) used in the countries in which they are manufactured, but they send (sell) them for us to use. But in the UK the Fairtrade/the consumers are trying to help us by saying to use less chemicals. Better for us!” Q.4 Click video to PLAY

Do Fairtrade Farmers Cut the Grass Underneath The Bananas? “There are a few. Like last meeting we had three new members who were saying that they couldn’t handle the grass (weeds). Grass (weeds) in the field is very important because the heavy rains down here would wash away the topsoil and you can’t get good production. It is true. I like it.” Q.5 Click video to PLAY

In The Future “The future depends on the farmer and the consumer in the UK. If we could produce the right product that they want then they would always buy and we would always get the market. But if we can’t do what they want – out goes we ( we go out of business). Q.6 Click video to PLAY
