How does one develop a negative body image? Negative comments from others about their appearance Having low self-esteem and lacking a sense of self worth Not being able to fit into the smaller sized clothing be sold in stores Media messages about being thin and attractive Comparing themselves to the “cultural ideal” of beauty

Excessive dieting and exercise that can lead to health issues, i.e. eating disorders Withdrawal from friends and social events Depression or self-harm Use of diet pills or steroids Elective procedures to change appearance, i.e. botox, plastic surgery
