The Rationale   Sex is everywhere! It can be direct or indirect, censored or uncensored. It is found in all forms of media including television, movies, advertisement, and literature.   The word sex can consist of many different elements depending on a person’s ethic background, experiences, and age. Sex can be openly discussed or deliberately ignored.   Students of all ages, specifically young teens, need to be educated about the meaning of sex, the consequences, and skills needed to make decisions when faced with sexual issues.   This presentation will discuss the issues surrounding sexual intercourse with the aid of current mathematical and sexual health statistics. The main objective is to provide students with an alternative to becoming sexually active and to increase their awareness that ‘not everyone is doing it’.

Expectations of the Grade 8 Curriculum Physical Education Expectations:   Apply living skills (e.g., decision-making, problem-solving, and refusal skills) to respond to matters related to sexuality, drug use, and healthy eating habits.   Explain the importance of abstinence as a positive choice for adolescents. Mathematic Expectations:   Discuss trends in graphs to clarify understanding and draw conclusions about data.   Read and report information about data presented on line graphs, comparative bar graphs, pictographs, and circle graphs, and use the information to solve problems.

Myths and Facts Myth #1 * Young teens are already very sexually active and do not need to be educated.Fact: * Many teens are sexually active but most are not. * Youth are experimenting with other sexual activities such as oral sex, because they do not view it as “sex”. * Youth who are sexually active may have many partners and very often. * Youth are unaware that people who appear healthy can carry STI’s.

Myths and Facts Myth #2: * If youth are educated about sexual health, they will experiment.Fact: * It is the opposite effect, if students are educated they are more likely to postpone initiation or will be more responsible when faced with sexual issues such as using a condom.

Myths and Facts Myth #3 * Abstinence-only programs are the most effective form of education.Fact: * Abstinence is the most effective choice for youth, but it does not provide information and skills related to consistent contraceptive use and safer sex practices are inappropriate and ineffective.

Sexual Education is a Right Youth have a right to information, motivation/personal insight and skills necessary to prevent negative sexual health outcomes (i.e. unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections), and to enhance sexual health (i.e. positive self-image, maintenance of reproductive health). The school is an unique and meaningful mediator to provide youth the information and skills that will be needed to make and act upon decisions that promote sexual health throughout their lives.

Age of First Sexual Intercourse Among 15 Year Olds

Condom Use Among 15 Year Olds

Discussion According to the graphs answer the following Questions: Which gender has the highest rate of sexual intercourse at each age? By how much? At what age is there an increase in the rate of intercourse? Is there a difference between genders? Are there any visible trends between the graphs? Explain. Your own Perspective: What type of decisions will you be faced with before, during and after you are 15 years of age with regards to sexual health? How will you respond to these decisions?
