Rebuking The Indifference 1:1-15  The remnant responds vv. 12-15  This illustrates the effectiveness of the “right kind” of preaching  The only kind of preaching that will stir men’s hearts to obedience is that which is filled with a “Thus saith the Lord” 1:2, 5, 7 2:6, 11

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  It is now the 21st day, 7th month v. 1 (almost 2 months since Haggai came)  The prophet addresses those old enough to remember Solomon’s temple vv. 2-3  They had dealt with this “disappointment” some 16 years earlier Ezra 3:10-13

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  Haggai’s message vv. 4-9  All nations will come “with their wealth” to fill the remnant’s house v. 7  God reminded them He already owns all the silver & gold v. 8  What is this “wealth?”

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  Haggai’s message vv. 4-9  The nations’ “wealth” v. 7  Not material wealth  A Messianic prophecy re: the “mountain of the Lord’s house” Isa 2:2-3  All nations (i.e. Gentiles) will “stream to it”

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  Haggai’s message vv. 4-9  The nations’ “wealth” v. 7  The “wealthiest commodity” anyone could bring = his/her soul  This “house will be filled with glory” v. 7  Though smaller in size than Solomon’s

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  Haggai’s message vv. 4-9  The latter glory of this house (remnant) will be greater than the former (Solomon) v. 9a  In this house God will give “peace” v. 9b Isa 9:6 Rom 5:1 Eph 2:14-18

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  A Messianic passage Heb 12:18-29  The N.T. kingdom that “can’t be shaken”  “Shaking” took place so the “unshakable” (spiritual; gospel kingdom) may remain  This is how the “latter is more glorious than the former” cp. 2 Cor 3:7-11

The Messiah’s House 2:1-9  A Messianic passage Heb 12:18-29  Other N.T. passages with the “building” metaphor 1 Cor 3:9-17 1 Pet 2:4-10  The remnant saw no “glory” in the smaller temple they were building  God viewed it differently
