PHOTOGRAPHY BASICS PARTS OF THE CAMERA AND HOW IT WORKS

PARTS (FRONT)

PARTS (REAR)

KEY COMPONENTS Shutter Speed: exposure time, or length of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into camera. Low speed = causes motion blur High speed = image freeze Aperture: the hole in which light enters into the lens, directly impacts depth of field, or the maximum distance in which the image remains sharp Small aperture = higher f-stop High aperture = smaller f-stop ISO: light sensitivity. Low ISO # = less sensitivity High ISO # = high sensitivity

TIPS/TRICKS Get good lighting. Working in the daylight or with the camera flash is best Find a nice background. It can be simple or a little decorative, but avoid unnecessary distractions – they’ll draw your viewers attention away from the actual photo. When in doubt – use a cat :D

IMOVIE HOW TO PUT YOUR PHOTOS/VIDEOS TOGETHER

IMOVIE INTERFACE

STEP 1: CREATE A NEW PROJECT Open up iMovie and in the main toolbar, select File > New Project. It will ask you to select a project theme. For a stop animation, select “No Theme,” then name your project and click “Create.”

STEP 2: IMPORT YOUR CONTENT For Video Files: File > Import > Movie For Photo Files: Drag and Drop your file

STEP 3: STOP MOTION WITH VIDEO To convert your video into a stop motion, run your cursor over the movie clip until you see a red line indicating your place in the video. Once you have found a still shot that you like in the movie clip, “right click” (or double tap the mousepad) to select “Add still frame to project.” This will create a image at the place your cursor was left in the video.

STEP 4: STOP MOTION WITH PHOTOS Take the photos you have (either straight from the camera or created by splicing your video in the previous step) and put them in the order you want them to be viewed. Then at the bottom left corner of the image in your project window, click on the blue gear. This will allow you to change clip, video, photo or audio settings. The image will be set to use the Ken Burns setting, which zooms in on the image in the video. To undo this: click “Cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation” then click Fit in your preview window.

STEP 5: SPEED IT UP Now that you have gotten all of your photos formatted correctly, you have to speed the images up so it looks like a “choppy” video. To do this, go back to the blue gear and click on “Clip Adjustments.” Change the duration of your still to 0.2 seconds (you can change this as desired) and then check “Apply to All Stills.” This will automatically give all your stills a 0.2 second duration.

STEP 6: ADD SPECIAL EFFECTS The special effects on iMovie are slow motion, fast forward, instant replay, rewind, jump cut, fade and a few more. To access them, select the clip you want to edit and go to “Clip” on your Toolbar. Another option is to go back to the blue gear and click “Clip Adjustments,” then “Video Effect” This will allow you to add filters like Black & White, X-ray and Cartoon to your video.

STEP 7: TRANSITIONS, TEXT AND MUSIC Give your video a professional twist with iMovie’s transition, text and audio features. Underneath the preview window, there is a gray toolbar. The symbols on the rightmost end of the toolbar will open up a variety of different options like audio files or transition styles which you can drag and drop directly into your project window. You may also choose to add a voiceover by selecting the microphone icon along the same gray toolbar. This will record an audio file from your Mac.

STEP 8: FINALIZE YOUR PROJECT Now that you’ve spiced up your video, wrap it up and post in on YouTube or Vimeo! To finalize your project, go to your main toolbar in iMovie and select “Share” then “Export Movie.” You can name the movie, select a place to save it and choose a the size and quality of the final video.
