Section 110

 By early April, 1836 bearers of the priesthood received their washing and anointing ordinances, including the ordinance of the washing of feet—they had been endowed with power and prepared to see the Lord  “After having performed this service to my brethren, [washings and annointings], I retired to the pulpit, the veils being dropped, and bowed myself, with Oliver Cowdery, in solemn and silent prayer. After rising from prayer, the following vision was opened to both of us.—...”  (HC, Vol. 2, pp. 434-435)

 We saw the Lord standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit, before us; and under his feet was a paved work of pure gold, in color like amber. His eyes were as a flame of fire; the hair of his head was while like the pure snow; his countenance shone above the brightness of the sun; and his voice was as the rushing of great waters, even the voice of Jehovah,...

 These keys empower those who hold them to lead all Israel, the ten tribes included, from all the nations of the earth, coming as the prophetic word affirms, one by one and two by two, to the mountains of the Lord's houses, there to be endowed with power from on high.  Bruce R. McConkie, Ensign, July 1973, 5

 After this, Elias appeared, and committed the dispensation of the gospel of Abraham, saying that in us and our seed all generations after us should be blessed.  D&C 110:12  Elias returned permission by which husbands and wives are sealed to each other and their children in the patriarchal order, or new and everlasting covenant of marriage  D&C 124:58  D&C 132:30-32 Who is Elias?

 After this vision had closed, another great and glorious vision burst upon us; for Elijah the prophet, who was taken to heaven without tasting death, stood before us, and said: Behold, the time has fully come, which was spoken of by the mouth of Malachi— testifying that he [Elijah] should be sent, before the great and dreadful day of the Lord come—to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the children to the fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse  D&C 110:13-16

 It is interesting to know that on the third day of April, 1836, the Jews were celebrating the feast of the Passover, and were leaving the doors of their homes open for the coming of Elijah. On that day Elijah came, but not to the Jewish homes, but to the Temple in the village of Kirtland near the banks of Lake Erie, to two humble servants of the Lord who were appointed by divine decree to receive him. (CHMR, Vol. 3, pp. 78, 84) Pesach (Passover) begins on the night of the fifteenth day of Nissan and lasts for eight days. The highlight of this holiday, which commemorates the departure of the nation of Israel from Egypt, is the observance of the Seder, a ceremony performed on the first evenings of Passover. To this day, in every Jewish home [which formally celebrates the Paschal feast], at a certain part of the Paschal service—just after the ‘third cup,’ or the ‘cup of blessing,’ has been drunk—the door is opened to admit Elijah the prophet’ Alfred Edersheim

 Therefore the keys of this dispensation are committed into your hands; and by this ye may know that the dreadful day of the Lord is near, even at the doors.  D&C 110:16

 April 3, 1836 was a momentous day in the lives of the earth's inhabitants of this dispensation. On that day, the Savior and three other celestial beings appeared to two mortal servants of the Lord.  The priesthood keys restored that day in the Kirtland Temple have blessed multitudes of mankind, both in mortality and in the spirit world. These blessings have not come because of the powers of mortal men. They are the result of the concern of the Lord for His children. As these blessings are manifested in our lives today, there is an accompanying testimony that the Great Jehovah, the Redeemer of the world, lives to bless all mankind through His church upon the earth.
