KEY QUESTION 11: What is the periodic table and how is it organized? Identify the 4 things in every box on the periodic table and what they tell you about the particles that make up an atom of that element. The atomic number for boron is _____. The atomic mass is _____. Boron has _____ protons, _____ neutrons, and _____ electrons. Describe how the periodic table is organized. Elements are in order by ____________________ ___________________ on the periodic table. Define groups and periods and explain what elements in the same group and period have in common. Vertical columns are called ____________________ or ____________________ and contain elements with similar ____________________ ____________________. Horizontal rows are called ____________________ and contain elements with the same number of ____________________. The ____________________ ____________________ in group 1 are the most reactive metals. The ____________________ ____________________ ____________________ in group 2 are also very reactive metals. The transition metals in groups 3-12 are ____________________ reactive metals. The ____________________ in group 17 are very reactive non-metals. The noble gases in group 18 are ____________________ and ____________________. 5 B Boron 11 5 556 Atomic Number GroupsFamilies Chemical Properties Periods Electron Shells Alkali Metals Alkaline Earth Metals Transition Metals Halogens Stable Unreactive 11

KEY QUESTION 12: What is a chemical reaction Describe what happens to molecules in a chemical change. The number of atoms before and after a chemical change __________________________________. Which of the following shows a correct equation for a chemical reaction? Explain and define chemical equations, reactants, and products. Circle the reactants and put a box around the products in the following chemical equations. Identify, describe, and give examples of the 5 signs of a chemical change. Complete the table below showing the 5 signs of a chemical change and give an example for each. + + OR 2H 2 O 2H 2 + O 2 Sign Indicating Chemical ChangeExample remains the same Energy (temperature & light) Color change Odor change Gas formed Solid formed HotHands or Glow Sticks Rusting, Heating Sugar Rotting Milk or Burning Candle Electrolysis of Water Electrolysis Rusting Reaction

Today’s Agenda Warm-Up: Key Question 12 Exit Slip: Pair and Share Classwork: –CyberEd: Chemical Reactions Homework: –Study for Quiz Tomorrow –Complete Key Question 12 Conclusion: –Identify the reactants and products in a chemical reaction.

Student Objective Tuesday, December 08, 2015 Students will be able to… Describe what happens during a chemical reaction. Identify the 5 signs of a chemical reaction. Explain what a chemical equation tells you about a reaction.

Rates of Reaction What can be done to speed up or slow down a chemical reaction?

The number and type of atoms before a reaction is the same as the number and type of atoms after the reaction. Molecules simply unhook, the atoms rearrange and recombine to form new substances.

A chemical equations is a representation of a chemical reaction using numbers and symbols. Reactants are what you have at the start of a reaction (on left side of equation). Products are what you have at the end of a reaction (on right side of equation).

5 signs of a chemical reaction tell you that a reaction MAY have occurred. Energy change includes a change in temperature or light being produced. The only way to know for sure that a chemical reaction has taken place is if a new substance is formed.

What are the reactants for the equation below? Fe + CuSO 4  Cu + FeSO 4 ??? A.Iron B.Copper C.Iron and Copper Sulfate D.Copper and Iron Sulfate E.Iron and Copper Iron Copper SulfateCopperIron Sulfate
