2 Introduction of number zero These are actually two different questions, because zero here has two uses a place holder for digits, and as a value itself on the real number line.

3 Historical facts of number zero  there is no number that is the value of a number divided by zero.  The lack of such a symbol was one of the serious drawbacks of Greek mathematics.  zero has certain special properties in connection with the four fundamental operations.

4 The importance of zero zero became a necessity, especially in a base-ten system where multiples of ten are denoted by the addition of a zero. The number zero as a standalone entity truly became important with the advent of algebra, for often times in solving an algebraic equation, the number zero becomes a crucial element by itself.
