Who Really Caused the Whitman Massacre? By Lakai Panter

White man`s Perspective
There are many perspectives on events in history. The Whitman Massacre had two on events in history . There are two main perspectives about who caused the Whitman Massacre. One point of view is from the White man and the other is from the Cayuse Indians . Both perspectives and leading up to and beyond the White man`s perspective and follow with Cayuse Indians perspective.

According to Washington Our Home, the missionaries came to Oregon Country in 1831 was , because the Indians requested from William Clark. From the White man`s point of view the indians wanted to be converted to Christianity .

Next, in from the Cayuse War , Marcus and Narcissa Whitman build a mission in waiilatpu seven miles out side of what is now Walla Walla . The Whitman mission was a stopping and resting place for settlers. The missionaries believed that they were helping the indians by educating them ,teaching them how to farm, and the White Man`s religion. the Whitman's thought they helping by converting them to christianity.

In 1847 Washington Our Home and the Cayuse War says Eliza Spalding ,says that Dr.Whitman . got called into the kitchen by some of the Indians ,and got hit in the back of the head with a tomahawk. The Cayuse Indians attacked them, broke into homes, destroyed houses, and killed the Whitman's .They killed 13 people including the Whitman's and two sager boys .when the Cayuse attacked they took 53 captives including 47women and children . The fur traders and other settlers gave 62 blankets ,63cottonshrits,37pounds tobacco,600 loads of ammunition, and 12guns,sothey could get there captives back .after the Whitman massacre other mission started shutting and moving away.

Finally, in ,according to Washington Our Home Governor Stevens' between the years of asked the Indians in councils to signs end treaties witch gave away their land and put them on reservations .Governor Stevens' thought that moving them to reservations would stop the difficultly between the Indians and the settlers. Governor Stevens had promised the Indians that they would get everything that they need if they moved to reservations .those promises were not kept though.

The Cayuse Indians perspectives is very different from the White Man`s perspective.

The Cayuse Indians perspective
According to Washington Our Home , in The was three Nez Perce and one Flathead Indian ,that went to talk with William Clark to send the missionaries ,so the could understand the Whitman and his gods better. the native people believed that they were gifts send from a powerful gods.

Next, in Washington Our Home and the Cayuse war in 1836 the Whiteman`s build a mission. From the Indians perspective the Whitman were trying to covert the Indians into white mans beliefs' .The Indians did nit like what the missionaries' were teaching them and thought they had to many rules .the whit mans were trying to convert the Indians to christianity. The Cayuse did not want the Whitman's ideas , because they wanted to keep their nomadic ways of life.

Washington Our Home ,The Cayuse War, and the Cayuse Attack it states, in 1842 the white man brought disease and it killed half of the tribe . Pioneer's started traveling on Oregon Trail.

Washington Our Home , The Cayuse War , and the Cayuse Attack in 1847,After half of the tribe died from the measles the Indians thought that try whit try was using poison tom kill them with the medicine that Dr. Whitman was giving them. One of the Indians took the medicine and if it killed him they would know that the medicine was killing them. the next morning the Indian was dead the next morning , so Dr.Whitman should be killed for killing over half of the tribe . When tribal members attacked the mission it lasted for 3 days. They took 53 captives to an Indian village .

Finally, in , in Washington Our Home and the Cayuse War , in the next 40 years the Cayuse were finally defeated and lost everything . Governor Stevens signed ten treaties with the Indians moving them to reservations .

In conclusion I think neither the White Man or the Indians were at fault of the Whitman Massacre, because the White mean brought the measles with them and gave it to the Indians. Then the Indians killed the Whitman ,because they thought they were killing cure it so neither of them were at fault.
