Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID RFID a microonde e ad onde millimetriche G. Marrocco Univ. Roma Tor Vergata A. Toccafondi Univ. di Siena M. Mongiardo, R. Sorrentino Univ. di Perugia

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID RFID system components The main RFID system components are the following: Tag, Reader and a Communication Software RFID systems permit the long distance identification of objects through the insertion of an identifier usually called Tag or Transponder. The Tags are read and written through a device called Reader or Interrogator

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID Why RFIDs will be important ? Past: Information processed on isolated computers. Present: INTERNET- information processed on computer networks. Future: RFID - information (& sensors) stored also on OBJECTS and shared with computer networks via wireless communications.

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID Typical Applications

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID RFId Market Total RFID market in trade in countries if the EU-15, in millions of items [Sore 04]

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID RFID & Electromagnetics

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID Research topics for EM RFID impedance matching Miniaturization of tag antenna Printable tag design and analysis Multi-band tags (to comply different regulations worldwide) Application-specific antennas (e.g. for low-temperature biologic samples management) Integration of antennas and objetcs (e.g. a metallic case used as antenna) Location technologies RFID and USN system (ubiquitous sensor networks) Retrodirective arrays (scanning reader and retrodirective tags) Use of higher frequencies (mm-waves) (adv: smaller dimensions, higher directivity) RFID with MEMS switches

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID RFId - tag placed nearby a metallic object Univ. of Perugia A standard dipole placed near a metallic plate does not radiate! The dipole antenna has to be modified in order to provide good characteristics also in presence of metal surfaces

Univ. Perugia - Roma TorVergata - Siena: RFID Univ. of Perugia RFId - research RADIATION PATTERN: 0 deg. plane and 90 deg. plane RETURN LOSS in free-space and when the structure is affixed to a metallic plane (object) of variable size: matching in a range of more than 200 MHz in all cases(ADS software) RETURN LOSS in free-space and when the structure is affixed to a metallic plane (object) of variable size: matching in a range of more than 200 MHz in all cases (ADS software) M.
