1 REVIEW - CHARGING BY INDUCTION - Negative Rod
steel rod 1. 3. - + - negative balloon - neutral pith - + + - - + + 2. - + - Balloon brought close to pith END RESULT: The neutral pith takes on a charge that is opposite to the balloon

2 CHARGING BY INDUCTION - Positive Rod
+ + - 1. + + - 3. positive acetate neutral pith acetate brought close to pith 2. + - + END RESULT: The neutral pith takes on a charge that is opposite to the acetate

3 1) Friction from air currents cause charge separation in cloud
LIGHTNING 1) Friction from air currents cause charge separation in cloud 2) Negative charges on bottom of cloud repel negative charges in neutral ground (inducing a charge separation) 3) Electrons build up in cloud and move toward the ground. 4) Positive ions build up from ground and meet the electrons from cloud creating a spark (lightning) - Lightning takes the path of least resistance and carries a very large current Lightning rods are metal conductors attached to the highest part of a building and connected to the ground If a strike occurs, the rod conducts the charge safely to the ground.

4 SEATWORK ANTI-STATIC SHEETS
Anti-static sheet is a small piece of cloth with a waxy compound Hot air vaporizes the wax and coats the clothes - causing the clothes to behave as if they were made up of the same material WHY IS STATIC MORE COMMON DURING WINTER THAN SUMMER? dry air is a good insulator, moist air is a fair conductor in summer, air is moist and charges can transfer to or from the water vapour in the air side note - pure water is a good insulator , water is almost never pure, so water is usually a good conductor of electricity (so get out of the pool during a thunderstorm)

5 REVIEW FOR QUIZ pg # 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 17, 23 QUIZ - SUMMARY Parts of the atom Law of electric charges Charging by friction - electrostatic series - what is it? How does it work? Conductors, insulators Grounding Charging an object by contact - neutral object gets same charge as charged object Charging by induction - neutral object gets opposite charge to charging object Applications - static cling, sticking a balloon to the wall, lightning
