 Negative number – a less than zero. 0123456-2-3-4-5-6  Positive number – a greater than zero. 2Medina

Working with positive and negative numbers is like driving in traffic. You have to watch out for traffic signs and follow the driving rules. 3Medina

 If you don’t see a negative sign in front of a number it is positive. 9 + 4Medina

 Rule #1 – If the signs are the same, pretend the signs aren’t there. Add the numbers and keep the sign. 5Medina

 -3 + (-5)  4 + 7  3 + 4  -6 + (-7 )  5 + 9  -9 + (-9) 8 18 14 13 7 11 + - - - + + 6Medina

 Rule #2 – If the signs are different pretend the signs aren’t there. Subtract the smaller from the larger one and keep the sign of the larger number. 7Medina

 3 + (-5)  -4 + 7  3 + (-4)  -6 + 7  5 + (-9)  -9 + 9 -2 5 – 3 = 2 0 -4 +1+1 +3+3 9 – 9 = 0 9 – 5 = 4 7 – 6 = 1 4 – 3 = 1 7 – 4 = 3 8Medina

0123456-2-3-4-5-6 When the number is positive count to the right. When the number is negative count to the left. +- 9Medina
