2 Objectives To define health and wellness
To define health education and explain why it is important To be able to identify the components of the health triangle and explain each component. To be able to identify influences on your health. To define risk behaviors To be able to identify risk behaviors To define abstinence

3 Health and Wellness Health The combination of physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. Wellness An overall state of well-being, or total health.

4 Health Education The providing of accurate health information to help people make healthy choices. Goal: to give people the tools they need to help them live long, energetic, and productive lives.

5 Your Health Triangle Health Triangle Components: Physical Health
Mental/Emotional Health Social Health All health components are interconnected. When one part receives too much or too little attention, the whole triangle becomes unbalanced. You need to take responsibility in maintaining all three sides/components of your health. Social Physical Mental/Emotional

6 Physical Health How well your body functions
When in good physical health, you have enough energy to perform activities of daily living, to cope with everyday challenges and stresses, to resist disease, and to avoid injury. It involves getting adequate sleep and rest, eating nutritious meals, drinking enough water, being physically active on a regular basis, practicing good hygiene, and getting regular medical and dental checkups and treatments when needed. It also involves avoiding harmful substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, and drugs.

7 Mental/Emotional Health
Important parts include your feelings about yourself, how well you meet the demands of daily life, and your ability to process information. People with good mental/emotional health enjoy challenges, like learning new things, see mistakes as opportunities to grow and change, they accept responsibility for their actions, and stand up for their beliefs and values. People with good mental/emotional health are also in touch with their feelings and can express them in appropriate ways.

8 Social Health Involves the way you get along with others.
Includes your ability to make and keep friends, to work and play in cooperative ways, and seeking and lending support when necessary. Also involved is communicating well and showing respect and care for yourself and others.

9 Influences on Your Health
Heredity: all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from your parents Environment: the sum of your surroundings Physical Environment Social Environment Culture Attitude: the way you view situations Behavior: this is controlled by you alone Media: the messages of advertisers, magazines, movies, TV shows, and music Technology: computers, phones, tablets, etc

10 Homework Divide a sheet of paper into a grid of 10 rows and 3 columns.
Label columns Activity, Element of Health (physical, mental/emotional, social), and Influence (positive/negative and why). Record activities that you do the rest of today that influence your physical, mental/emotional, or social health. Identify which element of health they influence and whether they are a positive or negative influence and why. You must have at least 10 activities listed. To be turned in for a grade tomorrow.

11 Example Activity Element of Health (physical, mental/emotional, social) Influence (positive or negative and why) Worked hard on my science project. Mental Positive; I am learning new information and developing my thinking skills. Watched TV and ate chips. Physical and mental/emotional Negative; An ad for chips made me hungry and I should be physically active instead of sitting on the couch.

12 Risk behaviors What are you doing that could be harming your health and quality of life?

13 Risk behavior Any behavior that threatens your health or the health of others in a negative way.

14 Think. Write. Pair. Share. Take 2 minutes to think of different risk behaviors. Write them down. Pair up with the person next to you. Compare your lists of risk behaviors and see if you can come up with any others together. Talk about why you listed each behavior as a risk behavior. What behaviors did you identify as risk behaviors? (Each group shares one risk behavior they have listed with the rest of the class.)
