4 PROPERTIES Intensive A property that does not change when the amount of sample changes. – density, pressure, temperature, color. Extensive A property that changes when the amount of matter in a sample changes. – mass, volume, length, and charge

5 Properties Mass Anything that takes up space and remains constant regardless of location Weight Force that measure the pull on a given mass by gravity; dependent on location Volume LxWxH Changes with temperature

7 SPECIFIC GRAVITY Specific Gravity: has no units!! Specific gravity is the density of a substance relative to some reference substance: ( usually compared to water. Specific gravity = density of substance density of reference substance
