2 Key People Hessians: mercenaries hired by the British to fight the Patriots. Friedrich Von Steuben: German army officer who trained Patriot troops at Valley Forge. Lemuel Hayes: African American Patriot who fought in the Revolutionary War. Marquis de Lafayette: French nobleman who became one of George Washington’s most trusted aides. Nathan Hale: Patriot spy who disguised himself as a teacher to trick the British. John Paul Jones: Famous privateer captain who was known for saying, “I have not yet begun to fight!” George Washington: Commander of the Continental army; led the Patriots to victory. Charles Cornwallis: British commander who surrendered his troops to George Washington in Yorktown.

6 British Advantages: Large, professional army Large, powerful navy Plentiful money and supplies. Patriot advantages: Fighting the war at home- easy access to supplies and sooldiers. Fighting for freedom; had a strong desire to win. Had help from foreign nations such as France and Spain.
