There are two types of features:  Sketched – requires a sketched profile  Applied – requires an existing edge or face Extruded Boss/Base is a sketched feature that adds material and requires a 2D sketch. Fillet feature adds/removes material along a selected edge or face.

7 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Dimensions and Parameters Dimensions determine the overall size of a part, such as length or radius. Change a dimension value to modify the part.

8 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Dimensions and Parameters Features are driven by parameters that determine different characteristics of a feature, such as the number of holes in a pattern, or the depth of the hole.

13 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Project 4 – Part Template A Template is the foundation for a SolidWorks document. A template contains settings for units, dimensioning standards and other properties. Create two part templates for the FLASHLIGHT Project:  PART-IN-ANSI  PART-MM-ISO

14 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create a Part Template Create a PART-IN- ANSI Part template. Set Document Properties:  Select ANSI from the Overall drafting standard drop- down box.  Set Unit System.  Set Precision.  Set the Grid/Snap option.

17 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Set System Options Set System Options to add the two new Part Templates to the New SolidWorks Document dialog box. Display the MY- TEMPLATES folder and templates.

18 Copyright Planchard & Planchard 2D Sketch Procedure Select a Sketch Plane.  Top Plane, Front Plane & Right Plane Select a Sketch Tool.  Rectangle, Circle, Line, etc. Create the Sketch. Add Relations.  Equal, Parallel, Perpendicular  Tangent, Horizontal, Vertical  Coincident, Concentric Add dimensions to fully define your sketch.

20 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Sketch the 2D Sketch profile centered at the Origin. Dimension the sketch as illustrated. Insert an Extruded Boss/Base feature.  Apply the Instant3D tool.

21 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Check the Boss- Extrude1 feature depth dimension with the Boss- Extrude PropertyManager.  Enter 4.10 for depth if needed. Save the BATTERY.

23 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Insert an Extruded Cut Feature. An Extruded Cut feature removes material. An Extruded Cut feature requires:  Sketch plane (Top face)  Sketch profile (Offset Entities)  End Condition depth (Blind) in Direction 1

24 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Offset the existing geometry from the boundary of the Sketch plane. The Offset Entity Sketch tool uses existing geometry, extracts an edge or face and locates the geometry on the current Sketch plane. Offset the existing Top face for the 2D sketch. Utilize the default Blind End Condition in Direction 1.

25 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Insert the Extruded Cut feature. Rename the feature. Save the part. All sketches should be fully defined.

26 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Insert the Fillet feature. The Fillet feature tool rounds sharp edges by selecting a face. A Fillet requires a:  A selected face  Fillet radius Insert a Fillet feature on the top face as illustrated.

27 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Create an Extruded Boss feature for the Terminals. The Extruded Boss/Base feature in this case requires a truncated cone shape to represent the geometry of the BATTERY terminals. The Draft Angle option creates the tapered shape. Create a sketch for the Extruded Boss feature.

28 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Create the second circle. Copy and paste the first sketched circle to create the second circle. Add all needed dimensions and geometric relations. The sketch should be fully defined.

29 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERY Part Insert an Extruded Boss/Base feature with a 5 deg draft. Rename the feature. Save the part. View the results.

30 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERYPLATE Part Design the BATTERYPLATE. Utilize features from the BATTERY to develop the BATTERYPLATE. The BATTERYPLATE is manufactured as an injection molded plastic part. Build Draft into the Extruded Boss/Base features.

31 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERYPLATE Part Edit the BATTERY features. Create two holes from the original sketched circles. Apply the Instant3D tool to create an Extruded Cut feature. Modify the dimensions of the Base feature. Add a 3º draft angle.

33 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERYPLATE Part Create an Extruded Cut feature from the Sketch– TERMINALS using Instant3D. Edit the Base Extrude feature. Modify the dimensions.

34 Copyright Planchard & Planchard Chapter 4 – Create the BATTERYPLATE Part Save the part. The Holder is created with a circular Extruded Boss/Base feature. Utilize the Offset Entities Sketch tool to create the second circle. Apply a draft angle of 3° in the Extruded Boss feature.
