1. Major Art Modality Utilized: Creative Movement, Visual Art Multiple Intelligences Addressed: Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Interpersonal Lesson Abstract: This pantomime activity explores the concept of symmetry through a mirror image dramatic activity (McCaslin, 1999, p. 83). This lesson builds on the concept of symmetry explore and find symmetry in artwork and in everyday life in the world around us. Materials Needed: Images displaying symmetry, digital cameras, printed images of student’s work Procedure: Part 1 Students recall the definition of symmetry and identify the line of symmetry within images and the class room. Explain the concept of pantomime (acting without words). Students will demonstrate their understanding of symmetry through their pantomime performance. Model the activity for the students: ask for one student volunteer to strike a pose, the teacher exhibits symmetry by becoming a mirror image of the student’s pose. Divide students into groups of 3. Two students face each other, one acts as his or herself and the other a mirror image. The third student becomes the photographer and documents the process. They assist the two students by guiding them to make any changes to display more accuracy in their pantomime. When the students show accurate symmetry the 3rd student (the photographer) takes a digital photograph; which allows for instant display for the acting students to see. Viewing the image allows the students to see where they can improve and discuss their understanding. Part 2 Students receive a print of their group's digital photograph. Together they critique their work. In which specific ways does our photograph show symmetry? 2. Draw a line which identifies our photo's line of symmetry. 3. How could we improve our work? List, sketch, or photograph examples of where we discover symmetry: At school: At home: Choices for sketchbook assignments: 1. Find a symmetrical object at home, sketch the object in your sketchbook. 2. Search through magazines, books, newspapers, or photographs (other than the one created in class) to find an image that shows symmetry. Sketch that image in your sketchbook. 3. Create a collage of images that show symmetry. 4. Find an artwork that shows symmetry. Include the name of the artist and the title of the work. Write about the image. How does the artist use symmetry in their work? 5. Write to describe the following types of symmetry: radial symmetry, bi-lateral symmetry, asymmetry.
