Final Report

WST 100 and WST 300 Large introductory course traditionally serving up to 2400 students a year in 18 sections With redesign we are able to serve same student population in just 7 sections a year Students meet one day in class and one day online Use of same classroom where 200 enroll on Tuesday and 200 on Thursday and opposite days of online assignments that compliment in class lectures

ONLINE ACTIVITES Students engage in 12 online activities that compliment the weekly lecture 5 online discussion surrounding various topics - student engagement/participation has significantly increased & enhanced discussion- allows them anonymity, particularly when discussing issues that are sensitive/controversial. 4 online/self graded/self timed quizzes. 3 response papers

Student Learning Outcomes /Pedagogical Techniques Increased Student Engagement Used Peer Mentoring Methods Increased # of Activities Students Participate In Increased student success with immediate feedback on online assignments Reached out to new student population - our surveys continue to serve as our recruiting grounds for new majors

IMPACT ON STUDENT LEARNING IMPROVED LEARNING Midterm and Final Exam grades across all sections increased in redesign Use questions from online quizzes again on midterm and final exams Final Grades- the number of A’s increased; number of E’s also increased; number of EN’s decreased Also found student attendance in lecture much higher since students only meeting once a week

OTHER IMPACT ON STUDENTS Hybrid allowed more efficiency and consistency Increased opportunity for Peer Interaction Students enjoyed flexibility Able to reach out to students with different learning styles because of variety of different online activity types Students had more support- used not only TA’s but ULA’s Blackboard allowed 24 hour access to course/material

COURSE SAVINGS While not actually saving a dollar amount we did indeed save faculty time Decreased sections from 18 to 7 while still serving the same (if not larger) student population Faculty now able to teach more undergrad/grad courses required Instructional mix was changed to include fewer regular faculty and more TA’s and ULA’s/more consistency and feedback on student success/online activites Cost per student was reduced from $78 to $57 per student

SUSTAINABILITY Hybrid has been very easy to sustain and replicate Standardized our intro’s to allow more consistency among classes- all using same online shell Have created an undergraduate pedagogy class to offer in conjunction with hybrid to train undergrads and give them credit for student support of these classes

FUTURE PLANS Working with instructional designer to visually enhance our site Working with MS magazine and developing an online reader for students Looking at turning other high enrollment/high demand courses into hybrid format
