ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk ICP Vegetation* General activities and publications in 2009/10  ECE/EB.AIR/WG.1/2010/3, annex IV  Annual Report * Supported by Defra, UK http://icpvegetation.ceh.ac.uk

ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk ICP Vegetation Expert Panel Meeting ‘Flux-based assessment of ozone effects for air pollution policy’ 9-12 November, 2009, JRC-Ispra, Italy  42 experts:12 Parties to the Convention, ICP Vegetation, ICP Forests, TFIAM, CIAM, EMEP, JRC, Convention Secretariat  Agreed on methodology and further data analysis before 23 rd TFM  Follow-on discussions and decisions at 23 rd TFM (Feb 2010)  Adoption of 10 new/revised flux-based CLs & their application, incl. policy-relevant indicators for IAM  Agreed at 26 th ICP M&M TFM, 26 th ICP Forests TFM  Revision chapter 3 Modelling and Mapping Manual Flux-based critical levels for ozone

ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk 23 rd Task Force Meeting (CODA-CERVA, Tervuren, Belgium, 1-3 February, 2010)  58 experts from 20 countries, including Cuba and Japan and a representative from EMEP-MSC/East Unfortunately the Secretariat was not able to attend  Main decisions:  10 new/revised flux-based ozone critical levels  O 3 & food security report (end 2010)  O 3, carbon sequestration and CC report (end 2011)  Review mosses as biomonitors of POPs (2011)  Pilot study on POPs during 2010/11 moss survey

ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk Workshop on Climate & Air (Oct. 2009)  Co-benefits for reducing surface ozone concentrations for both air pollution and climate change policies  Stomatal O 3 flux: CC factors incorporated  O 3 and CC impacts on vegetation are complex: Non-linearity of interactions Scaling up  Impacts of ozone on vegetation and feedbacks to climate need to be included in global climate models in order to better predict consequences for C sequestration and hydrological cycles  More large scale, long-term multi-component field studies required (including for parameterisation and validation of model components)

ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk  35 countries in ECE region, including Belarus, Russian Federation, Ukraine (EECCA) and several SEE countries  Task Force Meetings: delegates from Japan, India, Cuba, S. Africa  Ozone biomonitoring: China, Cuba, Japan, S. Africa  SEI-York: secretariat Global Atmospheric Pollution (GAP) Forum RAPIDC (Regional Air Pollution In Developing Countries – continuation of funding for South Asia, including Malé Declaration countries (2010-2012)  Report ozone impacts on food security: input from South Asia Participation and Outreach Malé Declaration

ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk Publications  Air Pollution and Vegetation: ICP Vegetation Annual Report 2009/2010  Leaflet on N threat  Chapter EMEP Status Report 1/2010; contributions to EMEP Status Report 2/2010 & HTAP 2010 assessment report  5 papers (2 in press)

ICP VEGETATION 29 th session WGE Integrated science for our changing world www.ceh.ac.uk 24 th Task Force Meeting Thank you for your attention! 31 Jan – 2 Feb 2011, Rapperswil, Switzerland Forschungsstelle für Umweltbeobachtung (FUB) – Research Group for Environmental Monitoring
