California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz Why a wiki? Wikis are easy to set up. They encourage cooperation & team building. Wikis provide the opportunity to take the classroom experience beyond the four walls and the time restraints within a specific classroom experience. Wikis are a safe place where you, your students, parents and administrators can build an online shared space to exchange files, collaborate, and share knowledge. Wikis are available 24/7.

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz Wikis in the Classroom… “The word "wiki" comes from Hawaiian language, meaning "quick" or "fast." A wiki is a web site that lets any invited visitor become a participant: you can create or edit the actual site contents without any special technical knowledge or tools. All you need is a computer with an internet connection.

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz Wikis in the Classroom… A wiki is continuously “under revision.” It is a living collaboration whose purpose is the sharing of the creative process and product by many. One famous example is Wiki-pedia, an online encyclopedia with no “authors” but millions of contributors and editors. - TeachersFirst

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz Benefits for students…

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz Educational benefits / classroom applications: Students have ownership of the knowledge. They actively seek it, and they create it. Students are given the responsibility to look after a publication with a global audience. It's not just their teacher reading their work. High-level critical thinking is developed as students critique others' contributions for accuracy. Increased information literacy skills are required as students check their facts for accuracy and correct errors discovered by their peers. Create an online text for your curriculum that you and your students can contribute to. Engage in collaborative projects with other classrooms and other schools. - Web2tutorial

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz Topics to think about before getting started…

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz “Before you get Started”… taken from TeachersFirst How do you envision using the wiki? ( How will you explain it to parents and administration? Examples on next slide) Who will be able to see/join the wiki? (public/private) What parts of the wiki will you “protect” (lock from changes)? Who will moderate the wiki for appropriateness, etc? Will the wiki have Individual or global memberships? (by individual students if you want an individual record of who made changes, or with one log-in per group or class?)

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz “Getting Administrator Approval”… taken from TeachersFirst Once you an envision how your wiki will work and be used, it is best to get your principal or supervisor's approval if you are one of the first teachers using such a "new" web tool. Recent news stories about social networking sites have administrators on edge. Your school's Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) may have some specific rules about using tools like wikis. You want to find out the following…

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz “Getting Administrator Approval”… taken from TeachersFirst Is it permissible to post student work to web? What is the policy on: posting student names (initials? pseudonyms?) posting pictures of students or class scenes? posting any information that might identify the wiki class? Can these policies be met through security settings, parent and student agreements?

California Technology Assistance Project Region V Monterey.San Benito.Santa Clara.Santa Cruz “Which wiki for you?”- TeachersFirst As of early 2008, Wikispaces, Wetpaint, and PBWiki have offers for free, secure, advertising-free wiki space for classroom use, each with its own features.WikispacesWetpaintPBWiki Set the entire wiki to private view (visible and editable only by members) if this is your school's policy. - Make sure that any wiki tool you choose permits the options YOU need.
