CLIC/CLEX controls Radiation issue August 29 th, 2012 F.Locci - BE/CO-FE

Radiation Impacts and Hardening Techniques M.Brugger (R2E comittee), R.Gaillard (CERN training) J.Christiansen (PH-ESE – LHC Expertise and Hardness implementation) – Singular events are the most critical for operation but easier to prevent – < 100 Gy/year: COTS electronics with precautions – high-radiation level (> 1kGy/year): ASICs only (specific developments!) – Positioning is crucial: distance, type of sources, distribution – Shielding must be adapted Concrete (80cm) or metal (40cm) to decrease of a factor 10 Simple screen is not enough (backscatter)  big impact on the finale dimension (insertion in the wall?) Should think about ventilation and cooling (confined space) – First approach: Identify the radiation characteristics (type, energie, fluence)  Simulation, Monitoring? Define reliability and availability objectives  project requirements Needless to focus on electronics solutions. Only: Architecture, Design, Environment/Protection 2August 29th, 2012CLIC/CLEX controls: Radiation issue

TBL-BPM tests (BE-CO, LAPP, BE-BI) Specify the appropriate shielding for the BPMs electronic Proposal for dedicated monitoring of the BPM rad-tol electronics – LAPP tests post-analizing – For future needs (TBTS in particular): this implies a permanent solution – Can be used to correlate data with BLMs measures & FLUKA Simulation (Sophie and Eva) – Inputs for the CLIC-ACM project Both require some info: level of radiation and EM spectrum in the CLEX Not really easy to estimate (Experimental context)  need additional inputs from Experts, R2E, DGS, CTF-OP,.. (see next meetings) BPMs will be installed on girder 10 (end-of-line close to the dump) FYI: was decided to install BPM controls in optical-lab of the gallery (CO will deliver the 2 signals required: 96Mhz RF-clock and synch. Trigger) 3August 29th, 2012CLIC/CLEX controls: Radiation issue

Safety Engineering and Environment G.Segura-Millan (DGS-SEE-CO) : RAMSES Supervision 4August 29th, 2012CLIC/CLEX controls: Radiation issue

RAMSES Reports PMICT401 (clex hall entrance)* ; PMICT402 (start of TBL)* PMICT403 * ; PMICT404* (end of TBL- upstream of dump). 1.0∙10 1 SV/hr  ---------------------------------------30days--------------------------------------------  * According to RAMSES maps Dose Rates Highest at End of TBL 5August 29th, 2012CLIC/CLEX controls: Radiation issue

Radiation meeting reports M.Brugger first comments – RAMSES results: Low induced activity when beam is off  not much activation – but PMI used for prompt measure show high level dose (>10Gy/h, probably underestimated – saturation) – Impact on the electronics will be dominated by TID (ionizing dose), SEEs will be of secondary importance – Radiation levels seem to increase towards the end of the line – Behind the dump (a bit off-axis) is likely to be a good position for the control electronics -> a simplified dump could easily be put into the FLUKA model – The rather low energy will make shielding easier, as neutrons are still present lead is perhaps still to be avoided -> iron could be a good choice S.Mallows last report – Sophie did some rough estimate of the particle type energy near the beam-line Does not include effects of the concrete walls (likely to affect the neutron fluence) Does not calculate the fluence after the dump (more complicate and will take more time) “However what should be pointed out is that radiation from losses from the TBTS may also reach that region …” – New FLUKE Simulation for CLEX is running now and should be presented coming weeks – Simulation for CLIC will be done later 6August 29th, 2012CLIC/CLEX controls: Radiation issue

Conclusions Due to vacation period and people overload it has been impossible to plan install during this week stop Everybody should be back on next week.. to do: – Retrieve the latest data simulation – State on RADMON system (location, type, sensitive range, etc.) – State on BPMs electronics shielding – Check BI and LAPP scheduling (BPMs install, Shielding, TBL tests) – Check CLEX scheduling and new stop periods 7August 29th, 2012CLIC/CLEX controls: Radiation issue
