Props! Stagecraft 2014-Mr. Wofford

2 What are Props? An object used in a stage play and similar entertainments to further the action Short for the term- Property 3 different types Set Prop- large movable objects Hand Prop- small objects held by actors Set Dressing- object mounted on the set not used by actors

3 Who is Responsible for Props?
The Scene Designer

4 How Do I know what Props I need?
The Prop Master, using the script as a primary resource, develops a prop list of all props used by the actor in the action in the scene. Typically, the list is organized by Act and Scene. The prop list includes items that are on set and off-stage on a props table.

5 Where do you get Props? Pull from the theatre’s prop room Borrow from
An individual A business Another theatre company Rent from a commercial prop studio Buy, usually from a second-hand store Build in the Property Shop

6 Types of props Rehearsal prop- a substitute used by actors during the early weeks of rehearsal, e.g. a plastic cup instead of a borrowed silver cup used for the show. Show prop- actual prop used in show

7 Prop Locations On large (3’x8’) tables, a table is located on each side of the stage and at any entrance. Prop tables are mapped out in squares so that actors know what to grab and where to put them when they are finished. This also helps to track props through out the shows.

8 Prop Rules Don’t play with the props. Don’t sit on the furniture.
Don’t touch some one else’s prop. If it’s not yours, leave it alone. Put your prop back on the table when you’re done If it’s not a prop, don’t put it on the prop table.
