The following reading habit posters are formatted to 8.5”x11” paper to be printed and then drawn in front of students as a pictorial for brain imprinting.

2 Habit 4: Great Readers Understand How Stories Work
I can identify and understand literary devices like… (See note below) I understand story grammar: characters, setting, problem, solution, plot. I can identify and use text features I understand how stories work! Good Habits, Great Readers Unit 4: Grades K-3 Teacher Notes: The order of the thoughts bubbles can be coordinated with the focus lessons: week 1 & 2-story grammar, week 3-literary devices (add the specific devices with examples as they are introduced during the week), week 4-text features. Use the following comprehension strategy pictorial to reinforce the concepts for this habit: story elements. References for teaching: list of literary devices.

Idiom: a phrase that cannot be understood based on the meaning of the words (Gr.1) Understatement: words that mean the opposite of their usual meaning (Gr. 1&3) Irony: humor based on opposites (Gr. 1) Foreshadow: hints about something that will happen (Gr. 1) Alliteration: the repetition of the same sound at the beginning of words in a phrase in a sentence (Gr. 2&3) Personification: the representation of a thing or idea as a person (Gr.2) Pun: a humorous play on words based on two words that are close in sound but different in meaning (Gr. 2) Imagery: pictures that are created in the mind while reading (Gr. 3) Onomatopoeia: words whose sounds suggest the meanings (Gr. 3)

I understand story elements: characters, setting, problem, solution, plot. I understand how stories work when I analyze the story elements!
