Seating and Positioning for Optimal Function

Theoretical Premises Ability to control movements necessary to operate a computer (or other device) is directly related to the adequacy of a student’s seating and positioning. Determination of proper positioning is an initial step in an assistive technology evaluation.

What Effect Does Position Have on Motor Control? Good seating and positioning provides support so that a movement can be made more easily, accurately and reliably. Poor positioning extends far beyond discomfort.

Rule of Thumb Positioning Strategy Strive for…. 90 degrees at hip 90 degrees at knees 90 degrees at ankles

Considerations Is the student’s chair size appropriate? Is his desk the right height? Physically handicapped….more complex Whether simple or complex, the objective is the same…… The student should be secure and comfortable with a good base of support in order to function at his optimal level.

Physical and/or Sensory Issues Are Often Interpreted As Behavior Head resting in hand or on desk. Slouching in chair. Constant movement and fidgeting.

Positioning Devices Shoulder straps Lateral trunk supports Chest harness/vest Adjustable table Lap tray Slant board Grasp bar or dowel Dycem or other non- skid material Seat cushion/wedge Footrests Headrests Armrests Seatbelt

In Summary When a student is positioned properly….. the affects of abnormal tone and reflexes are minimized visual ability is optimal range of motion and functional hand skills are increased student feels secure and stable
