ADT re-commissioning after LS1 A. Butterworth, W. Höfle, F. Killing, G. Kotzian, T. Levens, D. Valuch with many thanks to BE/OP LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS11

Motivation Requirements for commissioning time with beam and for the ramp- up in intensity (including scrubbing) (assume the requirements for the preparation without beam will be dealt by the cold check-out team) A list of the modifications/improvements occurred during LS1 if not presented yet and a break-down of the activities and preparation required for: operation with pilot bunches, operation with a single nominal bunch, operation with trains (low number), operation with trains (large number). The goal of each step should be identified and the minimum beam characteristics and time requirements should be indicated. ADT re-commissioning after LS1 LBOC, 15.7.2014 2

ADT after LS1 (low level RF system) ADT undergoes a major upgrade during the LS1 2x number of pickups New Beam Position hardware/firmware/FESA/software New Digital Signal Processing hardware/firmware/FESA/software Many new properties/functionalities New FGCs (2x number of functions) New cabling (different delays and transfer functions) Number of significant changes is large  we consider it to be a new system Procedures well established, all experience from Run I. …and number of experts increased by 3.5dB for Run II! LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS13

ADT after LS1 (power system) Power amplifiers Maintenance (cleaning, divider calibration, re-commissioning in B.867) New relay plates New air cooling system New air cooling pipes New 200W loads Removal of pre-heating resistances New water flow meters in RB44 – RB46 New clamp between amplifiers and kickers New clamp between kickers striplines and feedthroughs Additional vacuum gauge in RB44 (3 gauges per beams and on each sides, 12 in all) Anode Power converters Cleaning Exchange all fans Adding new H.V. switches (command off/online remotely) LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS14

Cold check-out activities (phase 1) Check all pickup cables are correctly connected in the tunnel Pickup swap with BI HOM port VNA measurements for all kickers Once water and HV is available at P4 check all power amplifiers and measure the transfer function (via HOM ports) Once all systems are powered at P4, need to conduct a series of EMC measurements – new UPS seems to produce more noise than the previous one: Conducted UPS noise was a major problem in 2010 Ongoing activity (involving EN/EL, BE/RF, BE/BI, TE/EPC) LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS15

Cold check-out activities (phase 2) Check all FGCs, define new functions in the control system (TE/EPC, BE/RF, BE/OP) Installation ~ September-October Gains, phase shifts… Define new timings (BE/RF, BE/OP) Multiple independent DACs for different functions (main feedback loop, witness bunches, AGC/IGC…) Dry runs, once SR4 is back in operation (electricity, air conditioning). Expected September-October (BE/RF, BE/OP) LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS16

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Basic LLRF setting up (phase 3.A): Could be done in a shadow of other activities. Local work in SR4 (access to the analogue signals) Beam Position module expert settings (sampling, bucket 1…) Digital Signal Processing module expert settings (pickup alignment, signal chain up to the driver amplifier) Beam: pilots circulating for sufficient length of time (>30 minutes) Time: few shifts in a shadow of other commissioning LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS17

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Waiting for beam in SR4 during summer is not that terrible… LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS18

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with pilot bunches (phase 3.B) Beam Position module setting up: Dedicated setting up with orbit bumps (phase rotation, intensity related settings) Beam: single pilot circulating Time: provided our Matlab tools work with FESA 3 AND we can still access the FBCT and the BPM (orbit feedback) classes: ~4 hours per beam per plane Potential problem – some classes still FESA 2.10, new damper FESA 3? In case our Matlab tools do not work: ~2 days per beam per plane LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS19

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with pilot bunches (phase 3.C) Digital Signal Processing Unit setting up: Setting up of the “bunch 1” Setting up of a coarse 1-turn delay (prerequisite for any excitation or cleaning!!) Beam: single pilot circulating. Destructive test, need occasional refill Time: ~ 2 hours per beam per plane LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS110

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with pilot bunches (phase 3.D) Feedback loop setting up: Setting up of a fine 1-turn delay and phase shifts for each pickup Beam: at least 6, ideally 12 bunches circulating. Single bunches or a reasonably spaced train (not 25ns). Destructive test, need occasional refill Time: ~ 2 hours per beam per plane LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS111

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) White noise excitation for loss maps (phase 3.E): Prerequisite: Blow-up application updated to new HW/SW (BE/OP) Commissioning phase 3.c completed Beam: Something circulating, ideally in bucket 1. Destructive test, need occasional refill Time: ~ 2 hours per beam per plane If needed could be conducted just after 3.c LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS112

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with a single nominal bunches (phase 3.F) Beam Position module setting up: Dedicated setting up with orbit bumps (phase rotation, intensity related settings) Beam: single nominal bunch circulating Time: provided our Matlab tools work with FESA 3 and we can still access the FBCT and the BPM (orbit feedback) classes: ~4 hours per beam per plane Time: in case our Matlab tools do not work: ~2 days per beam per plane LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS113

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with trains, low number (phase 3.G): No special setting-up, check of the beam transfer function, eventually fine adjustment of the 1-turn delay Beam: train of nominal bunches circulating Time: ~1 hour per beam per plane LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS114

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with trains, large number (phase 3.H): No need for dedicated setting-up, only few checks in a shadow of other activities Beam: train of nominal bunches circulating Time: n/a LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS115

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with trains, 25ns bunch spacing (phase 3.I): Check of the beam transfer function, fine adjustment of the 1-turn delay Other checks/setting up (e.g. digital filters) Beam: train of nominal bunches circulating. Destructive test, need occasional refill Time: xx hours per beam per plane Operational observation system critical (Observation box vs. Expert buffers) LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS116

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Operation with doublet beam (phase 3.J): Check of the analogue signals Setting up of the Beam Position Modules Other checks/setting up Beam: doublet beam in some form Time: xx hours per beam per plane Operational observation system critical LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS117

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) 3.J and 3.K is new territory, difficult to make a realistic estimate of the time required LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS118

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Injection gap cleaning (phase 3.K): Prerequisite: Sequencers updated to new HW/SW (BE/OP) Commissioning phase 3.c completed Beam: Something circulating, ideally in bucket 1. Destructive test, need occasional refill Time: xx hours If needed could be conducted just after 3.c LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS119

ADT re-commissioning with beam (phase 3) Abort gap cleaning (phase 3.L): Prerequisite: Sequencers updated to new HW/SW (BE/OP) Prerequisite: AGC application ready and updated to new HW/SW (BE/OP) Commissioning phase 3.c completed Beam: Something circulating, ideally in bucket 1. Destructive test, need occasional refill Time: ~ 2 hours per beam per plane If needed could be conducted just after 3.c LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS120

Open questions Automatic intensity settings and protection (BE/OP+BE/RF) Current scheme with the SIS checking the circulating intensity in the SPS is already quite good Using this information and having a state machine programming the front-end gain settings is a logical extension Some ideas on the algorithm already there Where should it run, who is responsible tbd. Observation system (BE/RF/CS) Will The Observation Box be ready? Do we still need to use the expert buffers? All CCC applications need to be updated to the new source of data LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS121

Overall ADT re-commissioning time-line LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS122 Total: min. 72 hours (9 shifts, preferably not in a row)

Summary LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS123 Number of significant changes is large  we consider ADT to be a new system All procedures well established, lot of experience from the Run I

Summary LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS124 ADT is a very complex system, the re-commissioning will be quite demanding involving many people Provided enough coffee is available… …and enough food is served… …we should make it!

Thank you for your attention LBOC, 15.7.2014 ADT re-commissioning after LS125
