Comparing two Creation Myths By Dave Smith

The Cornish Creation Myth In the beginning there was a huge pasty A giant picked up the pasty and started eating it He didn’t eat it all and threw down what was left Source: www.pictures_of_giants.com Source: www.past_pics.co.uk

Source: www.pasty_pics.com The Cornish Creation Myth - 2 What became of the pieces of carrot do you ask? Don’t be silly – all Cornish people know you never put carrot in a pasty. The crust of the pasty became the world The pieces of swede and potato became plants The pieces of meat became humans and animals

Salcombe Creation Myth God created people, plants and animals. Some of the people became very rich One of the rich people prayed to God and asked for a special place where rich people could go on holiday God created a really beautiful place with beaches, an estuary and a lovely harbour. God decreed that only rich people should live there for ever more. Dear God Please make a special place just for us

Comparing the Myths

The Cornish myth didn’t really involve a God, or explain who was the Creator. The Salcombe myth says that God was involved in creating Salcombe. Both myths explain how the World, people and plants and animals were made. The Salcombe myth doesn’t say what Salcombe was created out of, but the Cornish myth explains that everything was made out of a pasty. Source: www.past_pics.co.uk
