2 Safety In the Science Lab Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

3 Safety First Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment. Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority. To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has been developed and provided to you in your student safety contract. These rules must be followed at all times. A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

4 General Safety Rules No playing in the lab or with the lab equipment. No disruptive behavior will be tolerated. Lab Safety: Everyone Is Responsible!

5 When necessary students will use goggles and gloves. General Safety Rules

6 Work only at your assigned station.

7 General Safety Rules Follow all instructions. Do not begin until told to do so by your teacher.

8 General Safety Rules Do not carry out any experiments without the teacher’s permission.

9 General Safety Rules There is no eating or drinking in the lab.

10 General Safety Rules When using chemicals do not touch your mouth, lips or eyes. Wash hands after using chemicals.

11 General Safety Rules Report any injury or accident to the teacher immediately.

12 Safety Equipment Fire Blanket – Located on side wall of classroom in the red container. Fire Extinguisher – Located across the hall from the classroom door. To operate the fire extinguisher remember P-A-S-S P- Pull the Pin A-Aim the hose at the base of the fire from 5-6 feet away. S-Squeeze the handle. S-Sweep the hose back and forth across the fire. REMEMBER: Stop, Drop, & RollOn Fire?

16 What’s Wrong With These Statements? 1.Hal says that his teacher is solely responsible for preventing laboratory accidents. 2.Keshia started the lab activity before reading it through completely. 3.Ricardo decided to do a lab activity that he read about in a library book before the teacher came into the classroom. 4.Stephanie says that the safety goggles mess up her hair and give her raccoon eyes. She refuses to wear them. 5.Barbie and Ken accidentally break a beaker full of some chemical. Instead of risking getting in trouble they quickly clean up the mess with paper towel and throw it in the garbage.
