1 Density

2 What is density? Density describes the relationship between mass and volume

3 Density Formula D = mass or m volume V

4 Units for Density Calculations
Mass is measured in grams (g) Volume is measured in ml or cm3 Density is measured in g/ml or g/cm3

5 Example Substance Mass (g) Volume (cm3) Density Steel Paper Clip .36 .046 Steel Bike Cable 19.8 2.53 7.8 g/cm3 7.8 g/cm3 Why? The densities are the same, because they are made of the same material. Each object is made of steel, so it does not matter the size or the amount you have, the densities will be the same. Density is a physical intensive property.

6 ** Density describes how tightly atoms or molecules are packed together **
* More dense = more compact * Less dense = less compact

7 ** The density of water is 1 g/ml **

8 Buoyancy Ability to float
If something is very buoyant, it has a high potential to float

9 Viscosity Resistance to flow
The more viscous something is, the more resistant to flow Example: Syrup, cold vs hot
