5 Jem’s Childish quotes Well, for one thing, he has a boy named Boo that he keeps chained to a bed in the house over yonder. Boo only comes out at night when you're asleep and it's pitch-dark. When you wake up at night, you can hear him. Once I heard him scratchin' on our screen door, but he was gone by the time Atticus got there. Well, judgin' from his tracks, he's about six and a half feet tall. He eats raw squirrels and all the cats he can catch. There's a long, jagged scar that runs all the way across his face. His teeth are yella and rotten. His eyes are popped. And he drools most of the time.

6 More Childish Quotes Jem is up in a tree, he said he won't come down until you agree to play football with the Methodists. (Scout) “Jem was careful to explain that during school hours I was not to bother him.” (20) Scout (Notice Jem spends time alone and up in a tree thinking… like his father would.)

7 Jem Developing Jem to Scout “Scout, I’m tellin’ you for the last time, shut your trap or go home- I declare to the Lord you’re getting more like a girl everyday!” (69) To Mrs. Dubose “ My sister ain’t dirty and I ain’t scared of you.” (141) (Notice how Jem and Scout have a love/hate relationship like teenagers would today with their siblings.)

8 Jem Becoming a Young Adult “Scout I think I’m beginning to understand something. I think I am beginning to understand why Boo Radley’s stayed shut up in his house all this time. It’s because he wants to stay inside” (227). To aunt Alexandrea “Aunty,” Jem spoke up,” Atticus says you can choose your friends but you sho’ can’t choose your family, an’ they’re still kin to you no matter wheter you acknowledge ‘em or not, and it makes you look right silly when you don’t” (300). (Jem like Atticus thinks the world is very imperfect and is beginning to think Boo is smart to stay inside) (Also, Jem is realizing no family relationship is perfect and we love our family members in any way, shape or form.)
