Family Schools/teachers and Family Schools/teachers Now think about the present. Move any cards where you think there has been a change. Objectives To draw out ambiguities in the role of teachers and schools in youth development. To examine examples of programs in the youth sector that provide different elements of youth development. To share potential policies for addressing youth development through teaching and schools. Outcomes A clarified but personal view on the scope of teachers’ responsibilities for the development of young people. Increased knowledge of the broader youth sector and how it affects young people’s development. Potential policies on the role of teaching and schools within youth development.

Having to navigate around more controversial issues and take decisions on them. A change in the type of people becoming teachers and their motivations for doing so. A need to balance the academic curriculum/exam outcomes with “youth-development” outcomes. A change in student teacher relationships An increase in the need for communication with parents. A greater need for extended services. A need for more inter agency work- social services, youth clubs etc.

These interventions are designed to strengthen, supplement or substitute the child’s parenting experience.”

9 “Outstanding support” – “Accurate and perceptive” – “Practical tips and strategies” – “Tireless commitment” – “Important and relevant issues delivered at a high level” www.lkmconsulting.co.uk Policy groups… In groups pick a challenge or area of potential development and prepare a 4 point policy resolution that explains the context and makes recommendations e.g. - Teacher training - Teacher recruitment - Decision making on controversial/morally charged areas - Development of social skills - Balancing curriculum/exam outcomes and developmental priorities - Communication with and amongst parents - Building relationships with other service providers e.g. 1.Noting the increasing number of agencies involved in providing services for young people 2.Aware of the gains to be made through collaboration Recommends: - The creation of local youth taskforces with representatives from different services to identify gaps in provision and opportunities for collaboration - Coverage of “the wider youth sector” in all ITT (initial teacher training) programs
