Day 1 – Momentum (The Rear End Collision) Mr. Lambert Integrated Science 1A Trimester 1, 2014

Bell Ringer 1.What is whiplash? 2.Why does whiplash happen in rear- end collisions? Midterm anyone???

Agenda 1. Bell Ringer 2. Lab Activity 3. Reading activity 4. Worksheet 5. Exit Slip

Learning Targets On your Bell Ringer Sheet, write the following: We will apply Newton’s laws of motion to real- life experiences.

Newton’s First Law: An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motions unless acted upon by an outside force Newton’s Second Law: F = ma (the equation demonstrates the relationship among force, mass, and acceleration)

Lab Activity Follow the directions starting on pg. 292 of your textbook Start a new page in your notebook and write the title: The Rear-End Collision Where you see a pencil before the letter, answer the question in your notebook. Make sure you number them in your notebook so I know which question you are answering! When you see this, write you answer in your notebook!

Lab Activity 1. Gather materials 2. Setup your 1 st car. Your passenger should look like Figure 1. 3. Tape the seat to the car, and make a tape seatbelt for your passenger. 4. The car with the passenger should be at the bottom of the ramp. Have an empty car roll down the ramp and hit the car with the passenger. 5. Vary the mass of the empty car.

Lab Activity Repeat the previous steps using the following setup.

Send one person from each group to make the seats with me. The rest of the group should be setting up the experiment and making the passenger.

Once you finish the lab…. Read the section titled “Physics Talk” on page 294- 297 Answer the questions on the worksheet.

Whiplash video Whiplash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMJLn KWWwnQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMJLn KWWwnQ New designs to prevent whiplash http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDjl6t A24Bc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDjl6t A24Bc

Exit Slip Use Newton’s First and Second Law to explain what happens to a passenger in a rear-end collision.
