A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk UKOLN is supported by: Metadata for the People’s Network Discovery Service PNDS Projects Meeting, London Wednesday 27 April 2005 Pete Johnston Research Officer, UKOLN Marieke Guy Research Officer, UKOLN www.bath.ac.uk

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Metadata for the PNDS Metadata and the PNDS What is PNDS Metadata for? What is Dublin Core? The PNDS DC "Application Profile"

Data Providers Service Provider OAI-PMH

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk What is PNDS metadata for?

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk What is PNDS metadata for? Service –provision of a (set of) function(s) to a (group of) user(s) Discovery –finding stuff stuff user knows is there somewhere stuff user doesn't yet know about –selecting stuff from similar stuff Access –locating (copy of) stuff Users –anyone looking for stuff PNDS metadata must support the discovery/access functions....

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Functions : Search Search –Keyword (in title/description/subject) –Subject –Title –Creator –"Who" (creator, contributor, publisher, agent-as- subject) –"What" (concept/thing-as-subject) –"Where" (spatial coverage) –"When" (temporal coverage)

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Functions : Filter Filter search results by –Resource type –Language –Education Level –Collection

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Functions : Browse/Group Browse/group items by –"Who" (creator, contributor, publisher, agent-as- subject) –"What" (concept/thing-as-subject) –"Where" (spatial coverage) –"When" (temporal coverage)

Functions : Display identifier thumbnail representation title/name description name(s) of creator(s) name(s) of contributor(s) item type item format subject keywords name(s) of agents-as-subjects name(s) of concepts/things-as-subjects spatial coverage temporal coverage language education level name(s) of publisher(s) collection license name(s) of rights holder(s)

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk What is Dublin Core?

Dublin Core is not...... a set of containers

Dublin Core is not...... an XML format <my:DC xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" xmlns:my="http://purl.org/my/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" > My Thing My thing is a thingummy. 2005-03-15

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Dublin Core is... a metadata standard designed to support resource discovery across wide range of resource types a "core" vocabulary/set of terms... –actually three sets of terms "DCMI Namespaces", metadata vocabularies –managed by DCMI (Usage Board) –defined within... a conceptual framework/set of rules... –DCMI Abstract Model –describes how to use these (and other) terms –... to make statements... –... that form descriptions (of resources)

DCMI Abstract Model A description –describes exactly one resource –may specify a resource URI –consists of a set of statements

Resource URI Statement Description DCMI Abstract Model: Descriptions

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk DCMI Abstract Model A statement must contain –a reference to a property property URI all DC "elements" are properties properties may be defined by agencies other than DCMI –a reference to a second resource (value) value URI, and/or one or more value representations –value string –rich representation

Resource URI Property URIValue URI Property URIValue string Property URIRich representation Statement Description DCMI Abstract Model: Statements

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk DCMI Abstract Model A statement may contain –a reference to a vocabulary encoding scheme vocabulary encoding scheme URI type of value –a reference to a syntax encoding scheme syntax encoding scheme URI how value string is interpreted

Resource URI Property URIRich representation Property URIValue URIVocab Enc Scheme URI Property URIValue stringSyntax Enc Scheme URI Statement Description DCMI Abstract Model: Statements

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk DCMI Abstract Model A description describes one resource Applications typically based on description sets –groups of descriptions –where the described resources are related in some way Description sets serialised as records –according to rules of binding

Resource URI Property URIRich representation Property URIValue URIVocab Enc Scheme URI Property URIValue stringSyntax Enc Scheme URI Statement Resource URI Property URIRich representation Property URIValue URIVocab Enc Scheme URI Property URIValue stringSyntax Enc Scheme URI Description Description Set

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk DC Application Profile Specifies the terms (properties, encoding schemes) used in a class of description sets –Information on how properties applied/interpreted in context of application –Constraints on occurrence –Constraints on values (encoding schemes) Examples –"Simple Dublin Core" –UK eGMS And….

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk The People's Network Discovery Service Dublin Core Application Profile (PNDS DCAP)

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk PNDS DCAP (Draft) *** DRAFT!!! Work in progress!!! *** Specifies the properties that are used to construct descriptions of PNDS items How those properties are used –guidelines on interpretation –constraints on values encoding schemes Properties drawn from –DCMI Namespaces: DCMES, DC Terms –Application-specific vocabulary: PNS Terms XML Schema will be provided

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Overview of properties/encoding schemes Identifier –Item URI Title Description Subject –Keyword –Controlled vocabulary term (specify scheme in use) –Name of agent (person/organisation) (AACR2)

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Overview of properties/encoding schemes Spatial coverage –Specify scheme in use Temporal coverage –Specify scheme in use Audience –UK Educational Level

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Overview of properties/encoding schemes Type –DCMI Type Vocabulary Format –MIME type Language –RFC 3066 ("en-GB")

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Overview of properties/encoding schemes Creator –Name of agent (person/organisation) (AACR2) Contributor –Name of agent (person/organisation) (AACR2) Publisher –Name of agent (person/organisation) (AACR2) Rights Holder –Name of agent (person/organisation) (AACR2)

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Overview of properties/encoding schemes License –License identifier (URI) Thumbnail –Thumbnail identifier (URI) Is Part Of –Collection identifier (URI)

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Questions for data providers First impressions: could you provide this metadata? –For all items? –For some items? Do you use a controlled vocabulary for subject terms? –What is that subject vocabulary? –Approximately how many different terms are used? Can you distinguish person/organisation as subject from other subjects?

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Questions for data providers Can you provide person/organisation names in AACR2 format? Do you use a controlled vocabulary for spatial coverage? Do you use a controlled vocabulary for resource type? Can you provide DCMI Type Vocabulary terms? Can you provide UKEL terms? –For all items? –For some items?

A centre of expertise in digital information management www.ukoln.ac.uk Questions for data providers Is there anything missing from PNDS DCAP? Should the PNDS DCAP provide more information? –e.g. resource-type specific guidance
