4 LOCAL PARTNERS IN NNIP The defining functions u Build and operate information systems with integrated and recurrently updated indicators on neighborhood conditions u Facilitate and promote the direct practical use of indicators by community and city leaders in community building and local policy making u Emphasize the use of information to build the capacities of institutions and residents in distressed neighborhoods

6 INFORMING LOCAL POLICY Cross-site initiatives u Address real local policy issues, but in a comparable way across sites –LISC community development initiative (MacArthur Foundation) –Children and foreclosures (Open Society Institute) –NNIP Shared Indicators System u Exploring new opportunities – Convergence with new federal priorities - Neighborhood improvement - Sustainable regional development – Health and neighborhoods

7 BUILD/STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY New Cities Growth at a reasonable pace u Two strong new partners this meeting –Portland OR – Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies, Portland State University –Kansas City - Center for Economic Information at the University of Missouri-Kansas City u Strategy for expansion –Work with other interested candidates that exhibit potential –e.g., San Antonio, Jacksonville, Duluth, Madison

8 BUILD/STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY Services to Network NNIP Community of Practice u Expanding direct peer-to-peer interaction –Web-chats, email list-serve –Commitment to NNIP newsletter this year u Comprehensive redesign - NNIP web-site –New structure, look and feel –RFP to developers in June u Excerpts from national datasets to partners

9 BUILD/STRENGTHEN LOCAL CAPACITY Services to Network u Exploring options for local website development –Opportunity to view and compare options –Open Indicators Consortium review this meeting u Preparing to take advantage of new data sources –Addressing the challenges of tract-level data from the American Community Survey, this meeting

10 u LISC Community Development Initiatives - Operating in 11 cities (NNIP partners involved in 5) -NNIP providing discussion forums, helping build capacity in new cities, and producing supporting analysis - New Comprehensive Community Development Institute u MacArthur Foundation Grant: A New Book on Information and Community Change - Kingsley, Coulton and Pettit as editors -To cover state of the art in all aspects of the topic, but NNIP experience will be prominent LEADERSHIP IN THE FIELD National initiatives/opportunities

11 u National Community Information Collaborative -Proposal being developed by Urban Institute in collaboration with LISC, Enterprise, Center for Housing Policy, NeighborWorks, HUD and foundations -Purpose to assure continuity and expansion of community access to small area data from national datasets u NNIP Funders Network - Network of funders that support NNIP locally and nationally -Meeting today – convened by Cindy Guy, Annie E. Casey Foundation -Explore ways to interact with NNIP and expand contribution to the field LEADERSHIP IN THE FIELD

12 u Community Indicators Consortium (CIC) - Charlotte Kahn, President; Kathy Pettit, Vice President -Participate in Annual Conferences -Joint CIC/NNIP participation in work group on performance measurement (Tim Bray, Tom Kingsley) u NNIP & understanding impacts of the recession and foreclosure crisis - Based on new NNIP-wide Shared Indicators System -Analysis to better understand the impacts of these crises and how they vary by place LEADERSHIP IN THE FIELD
