1 It's A Mystery! Drawing Conclusions

2 Did you know that 4th graders are expected to draw conclusions about what they have read?
Use these two things to help you draw conclusions: 1. Information you already have stored in your brain (prior knowledge) 2. Information you read in the book A conclusion is the decision you come to when you put these two things together.

3 Lets Practice!! Kevin ran to the house as fast as he could. He threw his wet jacket on the floor and tossed his umbrella on the porch. He shook his head like a dog getting out of the bathtub. What do we know about Kevin? Did he Say anything? What were his actions? Conclusion: _____________________

4 For Example: I sleep in a crib. I drink from a bottle.
I cannot walk or talk. Who am I? I know babies sleep in cribs. I know babies drink bottles. I know babies can’t do these things yet. Must be a baby!

5 You’re doing FABULOUS!! Brayden sat in the living room reading his book while his mom made dinner. She was making his favorite, spaghetti and meatballs. It was hard for Brayden to read because his stomach growled loudly. He put down his book and asked his mom if he could help in the kitchen. Brayden’s mom told him to set the table with special plates. It was going to be a delicious dinner. Continue to the next slide…………….

6 Which sentence supports the conclusion that Brayden was hungry?
A. The dinner would be delicious. B. Brayden wanted to help his mom in the kitchen. C. Brayden’s stomach growled loudly. D. Spaghetti with meatballs is Brayden’s favorite dish.

7 You’re RIGHT!!!! C.

8 What did you know in your head?
Last Time!!! I grow on an ear. Cook me in hot oil. I will puff up and taste good. Some people microwave me. What am I? What grows on an ear? Ear wax? Earrings? Corn?? You wouldn’t cook or taste ear wax or earrings. I know!!! I know corn will puff up and it is sometimes cooked in the microwave. What did you know in your head?

9 See if a classmate can draw a logical conclusion based on your clues.
